Gaia VJ was a virtual space that allowed Gaians to assemble videos from YouTube and other sites into a playlist which other Gaians could watch in an atmosphere similar to Gaia Cinemas. Having a Gaia Online account was not required to view the videos, but those who did not have one would not be able to engage in chatting.
When it was updated in 2008, watching playlists earned users Gaia Gold, this was an attempt to persuade Gaians to take more interest in the feature, there was a daily bonus every day with gold earned from posting and by other means. There was also a one-time Gold bonus with the first playlist a user created.
- Click the "create playlists" tab to make a playlists.
- Use the panel on the right to search for videos, and then drag and drop them to add them to a playlist.
- Click the "browse playlists" tab to check out other Gaians' lists.
- Click the "watch" button, and be taken to the Living Room where videos could be watched.
- Browse popular videos, search by tags to find videos of interest, and laud friends or bury foes with the five-star rating system.
- Friend invites.
- Chatting panel, and chat bubbles.
- Ability to throw tomatoes at the screen.
- Add playlists to Gaia Profiles by going to the profiles "Edit My Profile Layout" link, click the "Content" button and select "My Playlist" from the options.
Changelog: January update
- Earn gold by watching videos or creating a playlist. There was a limit to how the gold was distributed to discourage playlist spamming.
- A mini-VJ widget that allowed embedding, such as onto a MySpace page, a blog, or a personal web page.
- Ability to change to different room settings.
Despite the claims of the feature being underused, a number of threads appeared upon discovering the features removal and the Dev alert. Protests were that the VJ was the place to use for friend gathering and chatting while listening and watching videos. While there were request to have the feature brought back, it was of no use as the feature had been completely removed from the site. Some felt that the lack of promoting the feature also brought about its lack of usage.
Others had no problem with its removal, and agreed that if the DMCA compliance was an issue, then it was best to remove the feature for that reason and also due to not many users being aware of the features existence.
[NPC] Moira: AnnouncementsEdit
Watching movies in Gaia Cinemas is cool and everything, but wouldn't you like to decide for yourself what we show? Of course you would. You're the boss.
Gaia VJ-- which technically stands for "video jockey" but you can make up any acronym you'd like (Violent Junkie?)-- lets you create playlists of your favorite videos from a bunch of video sharing sites (YouTube, Metacafe, iFilm, etc) and show them to all your friends, whether they're Gaia members or not.
Click the "create playlists" tab to make your own playlists. Use the panel on the right to search for videos, and then drag and drop them to add them to a playlist. Click the "browse playlists" tab to check out other Gaians' lists. Browse popular videos, search by tags to find stuff you're interested in, and laud your friends or bury your foes with the five-star rating system.
When you're ready to watch your awesome playlist (or someone else's), click the "Watch" button. You'll be taken to a special 'Living Room' Cinema screen where you can watch videos, invite your friends and throw some tomatoes.
You can also add your playlists to your Gaia profile! Just visit your profile, click the "Edit My Profile Layout" link, click the "Content" button and select "My Playlist" from the options.
Better go check out VJ, pal. We've overhauled the look, improved the searching, made it so you can put up your playlists on other sites, and all kinds of other stuff. Let's delve into the awesomeness a little:
1: Gold! Glorious GOLD!
Watching playlists will now earn you a bit of Gaia Gold. Like with nearly everything else, it's on a daily 'curve,' so you'll earn a goodly chunk of Gold the first time you watch a video, then it'll gradually dwindle after that.
You'll also earn some Gold the first time you create a VJ playlist, so try it out! We won't give you Gold every time you create one, because we don't want people making a bunch of terrible playlists just for the dough. We'd prefer you to make terrible playlists on your own artistic terms, without the corrupting influence of money.
2: I'll bet you're sick of the word 'widget'!
We've created a little mini-VJ widget that you can embed in your MySpace page, your blog, your personal web page, or, if you have a good enough vet, your cat. Anyone who visits your page will be able to watch your playlist, chat and hang out-- and you'll earn Gold whenever they do.
To use this thing, just make a playlist, click the 'Share' link and then click the 'Embed' tab. You can also access this at any time from My Playlists by clicking 'Embed' link. You'll be given an HTML code that you can stick anywhere that allows embed codes.
3: Extensive betterment!
We've improved the living hell outta this thing. First of all, our YouTube integration is now way better: searches return much better results, you can search by YouTube username, and you can import videos directly from your YouTube favorites and playlists!
Secondly, you can now choose three different styles of décor for your viewing experience: the regular living room, a nightclub look or a classic drive-in theater that lets you pull up your car and
And thirdwise and finalmost: it looks better. We redesigned the page so it looks a little less like the control panel for a nuclear reactor. It should be a little easier on the eyes and a lot easier to use.
- When Gaia VJ was first released, the massive influx of people jumping onto the VJ caused one of servers to overload.
- Ironically, the feature was shut down the same month of its release.
