Hello, Sciencers! I have some positively incredible news to report, and I'm going to need your help shortly as well. I've spent the past several weeks researching and experimenting with a rather unstable and uncertain item, the likes of which I've never previously seen. As of yet it seems that no one else has discovered this type of item, which means that I get dibs on what to name it! Up until now I've referred to it as a "Choose Your Own Evolving Item" or "A Horrific Experiment in Morality", but neither of those seem like they'll do well from a professional standpoint, for, well, obvious reasons. In the interim, I am referring to it as an Adventure Evolving Item, or AEI for short.

Now then, here's the part where I need your help. Please read a bit about this experiment of mine, then I'll tell you a bit about how you can help me out with this unusual procedure.

-

Hero's Journey:

Vander took a deep breath and plunged into the flames. Through the thick smoke, he could barely see the path ahead, but he knew that somewhere in this smoldering cottage his best friend was in peril. Lyel was a mutt, a former stray, and about as well-trained as a fish, but he was Vander's pup nonetheless, and so the youth was dashing right into the heart of the fire to retrieve him from the remains of the tired old building. It wasn't until halfway down the hallway that he heard a shrill but familiar scream. Aidah?! She must have charged in after Lyel too, once she'd seen the smoke. Damn. As he began to change course, the villagers outside sounded the alarm: The cottage was about to collapse. Two directions, two dear friends, and he could save only one.

A choice needed to be made.

A riveting story, is it not, Scienteers? Now, as you can see, a decision has to be made here, and this is where I need your help. I've set up a handy-dandy voting and discussion thread, where you all can help me decide what happens to this experiment next! There's nothing quite like trial by fire, right? I promise you this is completely morally and ethically okay to do, even if it's only because no one's done it before! Get to it, Sciencers, so we can see what happens next!

Greetings, Scienteers! As you all may remember, last week I introduced you to the brand new Adventure Evolving Item, Hero's Journey, and while I've still not gotten used to calling it anything other "Choose Your Own Evolving Item", I am pleased to report that you've all come to a consensus regarding where this experimental item will lead next. And by that I mean you've collectively decided on one option for me to pursue with my totally ethical and in no way questionable or exploitative experiments. In case you missed out on my initial excitement about this new and as of yet totally unique item, have a look for yourself:

Now, last week I requested that you all decide which path this adventurous item should take, be it to save Aidah or Lyel. After conducting a grueling week-long survey, I can report back as to which decision has been made, and can from here decide what methods of completely safe and not harmful or hazardous experimentation ought to be used as our reckless hero attempts to save Lyel the dog! Nonetheless, if you missed out on the discussion, please feel free to peruse the comments from your peers regarding what path should have been taken while I get down to the next phase of experimenting. I will report in next week with my findings. Until then, Sciencers!

22 AEI Report: Hero's Journey! Cast your votes!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Report: Hero's Journey! Cast your votes! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:56 pm

Wow Gaians! I'm shocked! Stunned! Amazed! Flabbergasted! Dumbfounded! Ah, I know there's a stronger word for how surprised I was to hear that the majority of you voted to save Lyel the Dog rather than Aidah, Vander's partner. Now I'm passing no judgements, especially not at that furry and adorable critter taking shape within the new poses of this fabulous evolving treasure, but I certainly didn't expect such a heated back and forth between the two choices. I myself voted to save the dog too, to be honest... Science has more use for dogs than humans these days. So many mysteries! Ah, but I digress. Take a look for yourself at this latest development:

-

Hero's Journey:

Vander stood frozen in panic for only a moment before Lyel began barking more loudly than before. Wait, not louder-- closer! "Lyel! C'mere boy!" Vander shouted and dashed towards the area he knew Aidah was trapped, hoping Lyel was following his voice to safety. As he reached the edge of the smoke, Vander's whole world suddenly tore to pieces.

The bright flash and searing heat were bad enough, but the sheer force of the blast threw the boy directly through the rapidly collapsing walls of the battered cottage. Lyel must have been directly behind Vander at the time of the explosion, as somehow the pup seemed shaken, but perfectly fine. As his eyes regained focus through the haze of destruction, Vander saw that Aidah was somehow unharmed... other than being in the talons of shadowy beast perched directly atop the wreckage.

It hissed to Vander directly before taking flight, clutching Aidah's limp body as it soared high beyond the clouds. Lyel howled as they lost sight of the figure.

Where could he go from here?

Yet again, it appears we are in the crux of two distinct paths. Should Vander seek aid from the brave adventurers in town, or should he set off on a solo quest with Lyel as his guide? I'm simply thrilled to see what you amazing Scienteers will cast your votes for next! Remember, Your votes will determine the next evolution of this gripping tale and it's associated item set and there is no going back. No pressure, good luck, and don't forget to pick up your own copy of this amazing item in La Victoire!

29 AEI Update: The next stage of Hero's Journey is decided!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Update: The next stage of Hero's Journey is decided! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jan 29, 2016 9:00 pm

Hello, Scienteers! It's been a remarkably busy week, has it not? So much has been going on, I've been practically buried in my research for a number of ongoing studies, the likes of which I won't bore you with just yet. They will be fascinating, and hugely rewarding for you to hear about, once they're done, but until then I must remain secretive about them. It's not that I have any sort of fear that other scientists will find out about my studies and try to emulate them, oh no! It's just that...well, there are limits to what most scientists are willing to do to fully understand that which they are studying. I, on the other hand, have no intention of letting my own moral judgment get in the way of the progress of science, which is why I perform completely ethical and in no way questionable experiments.

Speaking of, let's check in on our, er...pet project, we'll call it. I asked you all to make a decision last week, and a decision has been reached! We'll start with what happened last week, for those of you who missed it. Start at the beginning, as I always say! ...Well, even though this isn't the beginning, strictly speaking.

Last week, I requested that you all decide whether Vander and Lyel should chase after the beast on their own, or if Vander should go into town and gather a party of individuals that might aid him in his quest to save Aidah. After much discussion among the community as to what absolutely safe and in no way questionable experiment I should perform next, it seems that a decision has been reached! Although I admit that I myself voted for the perhaps more reckless option, it's been decided that Vander and Lyel will head into town to form a rescue party!

I can only hope that this rescue party is able to do something effective, or if nothing else that I'm able to use them to further my studies. If you missed out on the discussion from last week, feel free to peruse the commentary left by your peers in the discussion forum while I begin my totally work-safe and not in any way dangerous or harmful experiments. I'll have a full report of what's happened next week. See you then, Sciencers!

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Report: Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Sat Feb 06, 2016 1:46 am

Greetings, Sciencers! I hope that you've had a good week of discovery and exploration! Science is all about exploring previously unstudied ideas and information and learning more about the world around us, of course, so what could be better for a week than spending one's time investigating the unknown? I am always in an exploration phase in my research, I must admit, as there are so many procedures that have yet to be even remotely considered by most scientists! It means that most of what I do can very easily be considered groundbreaking! Or at least, it would if my peers properly understood the depth and magnitude of my work. I've heard whisperings about what I do and the quality of the work I do, but as always, all of my experiments are totally ethical and in no way bring harm of any measurable kind to the subjects being experimented on. Speaking of which, you simply must see how our subject is doing!

-

Hero's Journey:

Realizing that the situation was dire and he needed to act as quickly and effectively as he could, Vander headed toward the nearby town to get some help taking down the beast that had captured Aidah. However, as soon as he got into town and started searching through the people in town for someone to help him, he felt his pocket grow inexplicably lighter.

A quick blur of a woman darted past him, and in her hand he spotted a very familiar bit of leather—his wallet, which held all of his worldly wealth that remained after the fire. Vander chased after her and grabbed her arm, trying to hold the woman back before she could make a break for it. "Hey, that's my wallet, you thief! You give that back!"

"Leave me alone, you creep!" she shouted, pulling her arm away. A murmur of disapproval swept through the marketplace as Vander seemingly accosted this poor girl. If only they knew! She stared him down with a devilish grin, then in a singsong voice she added, "And you will never find me~!"

"Hey, wait!" he started, but before Vander could process what was going on, she'd turned and ran through the crowd. A hearty chuckle alerted Vander to a brawny armored man resting on the edge of the beaten path nearby. "I saw that scene, kid. I'd give you a hand for some coin, y'know." He gestured to his own satchel of money. "Assuming there's any left once you catch her of course." It was shaping up to be the worst day in Vander's life, but he once again had to figure out what to do. Should he take the thief on by himself, or should he ask the mercenary to help him take her on, knowing he'd have to pay the mercenary back once he'd recovered his wallet?

It seems we've reached a road that once again splits off in two directions, although this is perhaps less literal than it's been in past weeks. So, Scienteers, this is where I need your help once again! Will Vander attempt to take on this thieving rogue on his own, or will he call for the aid of a mercenary to get his wallet back? The choice is yours to make! As a reminder, of course, your votes will determine the next evolution of this gripping tale and its associated item set and there is no going back once a decision is made! No pressure, of course. Be sure to get your copy of Hero's Journey and get your votes in!

Hello once again Scienteers! I hope that the past week has brought you serious breakthroughs in your studies and research. I can say with certainty that I've made a lot of progress with a certain subject of mine, although to call that progress good would be...well, let's just say as scientists I think it's best we don't deal with "good" or "bad", and instead focus on the progress that has been made! So, although that particular experiment isn't making the progress I had hoped, it is definitely making progress. Speaking of progress, though, I'm delighted to see that you've all come to a conclusion regarding what to do next with that AEI friend of ours! For those of you that didn't catch last week's development, here's what you missed!

Now, last week I asked you all to decide whether Vander ought to try to apprehend the thief on his own, or if he should bring the mercenary along to help. You all cast your votes, and a decision has been reached! With a resounding 63% of the overall vote, Vander will bring the mercenary along! Now that the decision has been made, I can go forward with my totally safe, 100% ethical, and not remotely harmful experimenting. I'll be back next week with a fuller report of what's changed with our unfortunate adventurer. Until then, happy sciencing!

Welcome back, Sciencers! I'm sure that this week has been one full of distractions for you all, so I hope that you've been able to maintain focus on your studies and research. I will admit, even I struggle to maintain pure focus from time to time—it's hard though, you know, when there's that much chocolate around all at one time—but maintaining constant diligence in the face of challenge is what makes the most famous minds stand out from the rest. I am constantly working myself, of course, even as I consume the chocolate within arm's reach, but fear not! I maintain a regular space of separation so that my chocolate doesn't become contaminated by the absolutely safe and not remotely questionable experiments I perform. And also that the chocolate doesn't get into the aforementioned experiments, I suppose. Speaking of experiments, you'll want to see the progress that's been made with our AEI friend! I find myself wondering what will happen each and every week, but this week's development is particularly intriguing.

-

Hero's Journey:

It didn't take much for Vander to realize that he couldn't do everything on his own, and he went into town to gather help to save Aidah in the first place, so hiring the mercenary made sense no matter how he looked at it. "Yeah, I could use the help. I'll pay you once I've got my wallet back."

The brawny man laughed and replied, "You got it, kid. The name's Mason, in case that's important to ya." Without another word, Mason took off through the crowd, chasing after the thief with a large, swift stride. Vander followed after Mason, and Lyel trailed right alongside him.

Set near the side of a hill, the village roads were winding and poorly paved, and in the haste to get away from them and out of the village, the thief took a running leap and bounded over the short stone wall surrounding the village outskirts. With his large frame, Mason cleared the wall in one jump, and Lyel cleared it in a jump as well, the tips of his paws ghosting over the top of the wall for only a moment before he landed on the other side. Vander jumped over as well, but as he flew over it, his foot caught on the top of the fence, sending him careening into the ground on the other side. When he pushed himself to stand up, something in his leg felt very different, and rather painful.

At the sound of Vander hitting the ground, Mason stopped and looked back to him. "You alright, kid?"

Vander wasn't sure. His leg felt strange and he didn't know whether or not he could run, but was there time to see a healer? After all, the thief was making off with all his money! Should he stop and ask for more help, or should he keep after the thief so she can't get away with all of his money?

It seems that our friend is incapable of keeping himself out of trouble, and every week I worry that his actions might lead to something inconvenient for all of us. And also him I suppose. This is quite the development, and I am, as always, looking for your help when it comes to deciding where this experiment should go from here. Your votes will determine the next evolution of this gripping tale and its associated item set and there is no going back once a decision is made, so...we shall see how things progress from here, as a group! I look forward to hearing what you decide!

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Update: The next stage of Hero's Journey will be... - [NPC] Dr. Singh Sat Feb 27, 2016 10:00 pm

Hello again Scienteers! I apologize for the delay in getting back to you this particular week. When one gets caught up in difficult and engaging research, it can be terribly hard to pull oneself from it, and as you all know I am very invested in my findings. Sometimes these findings can involve week-long trials, all of which are completely safe and not harmful to anyone or anything in any way. As it stands, I've had much to research, so much in fact that it took a substantial effort on the part of my brother to get me away from my research in order for me to get back to our friend the AEI! So, in case you missed our last update, here's what happened.

After I relayed this news, I once again turned to all of you to help me make a decision on what course of action should be taken next. You all took to discussing what choice should be made and provided some enticing conversation, the full breadth of which can be found here. Now that our week has passed, a decision has been reached! Our unfortunate protagonist will ask a healer for help! This is sure to make for an interesting development, and I have a whole plethora of completely safe and not morally questionable experiments that I'll get started on right away. I'll report back in with my findings next week, Sciencers!

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Report: Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Mar 04, 2016 10:33 pm

Hello Scienteers! It has been a very busy week for me and my research, I must admit. You see, time doesn't stop, even for science and research. Or at least, it doesn't unless you're studying the science of time, I suppose. But I have to imagine that even then, there is no perfect way to make time stop altogether. In my case, time has done quite the opposite! In fact, time moved so quickly while I was working on one of my research projects that I hardly blinked and two days passed! It is a phenomena all its own, and I hope to someday have the time to dedicate to researching...well, time. But until then, I have a plethora of big things to study, namely the ongoing experimentation with our friend the AEI. After spending the week performing experiments of varying length and intensity, I think you will be surprised to discover just what changes our unfortunate protagonist has gone through.

-

Hero's Journey:

Vander did his best to keep standing, although the longer he stood the more painful it became to stand. Begrudgingly, he accepted that he'd done more than hurt himself a little jumping over the fence, and that seeing a healer was going to have to take priority over chasing after the thief. "Mason, do you know of any healers? I think I hurt myself worse just now than I expected. We'll have to catch up to that thief after."

Mason shrugged, a wry smile on his face. "I dunno about a healer, but I do know someone who I'm pretty sure can do some magic for you anyway." He looked down the road for a second and then looked back. "Plus, she's close by and I'm pretty sure she'll do it for free, which, considering your wallet just ran off, that's probably about as good as it's gonna get."

With a sigh, Vander realized the mercenary was right, and he limped his way toward Mason. "Alright, let's get this over with, and then we can get back to tracking down that thief so I can get my money back and get on my way to helping Aidah."

Mason led Vander and Lyel toward a small house on the outskirts of the town. The field outside was completely barren, and a dark, gloomy light seemed to sit on the building. When Vander stepped inside the building, he had the feeling that he was likely to die right where he stood.

The girl standing across the room didn't seem to help matters, even though she looked much more alive than the rest of the space. "Fufufufu, long time no see, Mason...what brings you out here today?" The laughter sent a chill up Vander's spine, and he turned to look at Mason, who merely gestured back at him. "He's in bad shape, I see. Well that leaves one of two options, doesn't it, fufufu...Coming to Sable the necromancer for health reasons, who would have thought?"

"What?! You're a necromancer?!" Vander said in disbelief.

"That's right!" She shouted, gleeful. "Now, there are one of two ways to go about this. Either I can heal you and you owe me something big down the line, or I can make you undead and you'll never have to worry about dying again!"

Vander's face went pale. He knew his leg needed treating, but he didn't want to be even more in debt than he already was, much less indebted to a necromancer! But on the other hand, he didn't want to be undead either. This day was getting worse and worse with every passing minute, but if he was going to save Aidah, he'd have to decide, and fast.

Well, I can't say for even a moment that I saw that coming, Sciencers. This is the joy of research though, isn't it? Every time you think you've finally got something figured out, a brand new twist or turn appears and sets you completely off the road you thought you were traveling down! As always, I'm going to leave what happens next in your...well, I was going to say trustworthy hands, but I don't know that any of us can be trusted now, with this development! Nonetheless, I await your decision as to what path our unfortunate friend the AEI should go down now, so let me know and I'll be back next week to report what decision has been made. Until next time!

11 EI Report: The Crimson Quartz and Hero's Journey!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: The Crimson Quartz and Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Mar 11, 2016 9:09 pm

Greetings, Scienteers! It has been a very, very eventful week for me, and I have much to report to you all today! I've been working on my various research projects, as you all know—I try not to spread myself too thin so I can dedicate myself fully to each project, but there are so many fascinating things to research that sometimes I can get caught up in them even though I know I shouldn't! This past week, I was so ensnared by one in particular that I had to drop what I was doing and give it my undivided attention, and as such, here I am with a brand new Rapid Evolving Item for all of you!

-

The Crimson Quartz (designed by Tiana Sidhe):

Come with us as we journey along with Sihra, a young Faekinde as he seeks the lost Sliver that will restore the Crimson Quartz.

Sihra had lived all of his life in the Valley of Mist, under the watchful eyes of his Teacher. He was the last his race, the Faekinde, having been orphaned during the last Dark War. And now his Teacher, an aged seeress, has called him away from his studies.

"The Celestial Alignment comes soon," Teacher croaked, tracing lines in the dirt floor of their cave. "The three suns will combine, and great change with it. It has been prophesied that the Crimson Quartz can only be restored to its full brilliance during the Celestial Alignment."

Under his finger, the dirt shifted of its own will, forming into a slender pale shard. "You must set out and seek the missing Sliver of Quartz." With a wave of his hand, the dirt shard dissipated.

"But...why me, Teacher?" Sihra said with hesitation. "I'm only a Faekinde."

"Only a Faekinde can heal the Quartz, youngling," Teacher intoned. "It has been forseen in ages past." He handed Sihra a clay twin flute. "Play the Song of Harmony, and it will show you the way. You must find the Sliver and save our world."

I'm fascinated to see where this EI is going to take us, but have no fear! I haven't forgotten about our AEI friend, Hero's Journey! Last week, I asked you all to help decide what would happen with our unfortunate protagonist after his encounter with Sable the necromancer, and while I don't blame you all for having chosen it, I have to admit I was surprised to find that the majority of you voted to let the necromancer heal Vander! Not that it's not a reasonable course of action, but really, think of all of the scientific knowledge we could have gained from having an actual zombie to work with! I suppose that might have been ethically questionable, though. Nonetheless, I will get to work on the AEI, and I'll have a proper update for you all on our hero's progress next week. See you then, Sciencers!

Hello once again Sciencers! I hope that the past week has been kind to all of you. I wish I could say that this week has been kind to me, but ultimately it has led to a lot of work, as some of my research plans did not quite go as expected! Nonetheless, that is the life of a scientist. After all, how can we hope to make truly great discoveries without first making some truly great mistakes? Not to make myself out to be one of the greats, of course, but it is a common theme that great scientists make great mistakes that lead to great discoveries, and surely that is what I have done! I don't want to refer to my progress as a mistake, though. These new evolutions are just...not what I had planned, that's all. Still, they are scientific progress, and that's what matters.

-

The Crimson Quartz (designed by Tiana Sidhe):

Sihra packed a bag of provisions and set out. The flute's song comforted him, though he had to wonder. Why him? He wasn't special. And how would he even know where to look for the Sliver? So lost in thought was he, that he didn't notice the rapid scuttling of tiny feet at first as they raced through the woods ahead of him. He stopped by a pond to rest, only then noticing that it had suddenly grown quiet...too quiet.

Something caught his eye, a quick movement in the brush. He leaned in closer, looking into the opening of a hollowed-out log. What was that...?

"RAWR, RAWRAWRAWR!" Something fierce made of purely of fluff and teeth popped out, startling Sihra so much he fell backward into the pond.

Hero's Journey:

It went without saying that Vander wasn't willing to become a zombie, no matter how in pain he was. With a grimace and a sigh that went on perhaps longer than he should have let it, he grunted, "Fine, I'll owe you and pay you back later, whatever, let's just get this healing thing over with..."

Sable let out a cackle of a laugh that echoed inside of the small house, then pulled a staff out from behind her back and raised it into the air. She muttered a number of things in a language that Vander definitely did not speak, or even understand, but right as he began to wonder what trouble he'd gotten himself into, he spotted the rabbit head on the staff. A second later he noticed the rabbit seemingly sprouting out of the ground...

The next thing he knew, Vander was being lifted to his feet by Mason, and found himself able to stand on his legs as though nothing had happened in the first place. He stared at his own legs and feet, then looked up at Mason, who merely shrugged and pointed at Sable, who had a maniacal grin on her face. "There, see! Toldja I could do it! Me and Lapbie made you good as new! Shame you didn't pick bein' a zombie though, we coulda had a lot of fun. Lapbie seems to know a lot about the two of you, by the way..."

Vander looked down at the green and very dead (although somewhat cute-looking) rabbit at Sable's side, then back at Mason, who frowned at Sable. "What do you mean, knows a lot about the two of us? What sorta nonsense is that? We just met today, how much could that thing possibly know?"

"Not like that, silly," Sable replied. "Lapbie knows you're chasing after a thief who stole all of your monies! And Lapbie knows that thief went to Voleur Den, too! You should head out to the west and find her there, you know. You can—"

"Wait a minute," Mason said, cutting Sable off. "Voleur Den is out to the east from here, not the west. Why would we go west? That sounds like a bad move to me. If we're supposed to be going to Voleur Den to get the thief, then we should head east, and quick."

"You idiot! You have no idea what you're talking about! Do you even know what directions are?! It's to the west!" Sable yelled. Mason looked ready to retort, and Vander looked away and covered his ears instinctively as Mason bellowed back, "It's to the east, you stupid child! And how dare you insult me?!"

They continued to yell back and forth at one another, but Vander began to focus on his own thoughts as Mason said something loud and not nice to Sable. If Vander's day was going to come down to making yet another decision that could make or break his life, then he wanted to at least be able to hear his own thoughts while he had to do it. He just had to figure out whether he should trust the bunny necromancer telling him to go west, or the hardy mercenary telling him to go east.

Well, friends, as you can see, there were a number of unexpected developments this week, so now you can understand why I was so taken off guard by the results of these two. Now, The Crimson Quartz will go on back into my lab for me to continue my studies, but as with previous weeks I need your input as to what totally safe and not questionable experimentation our friend Hero's Journey should undergo next. Until next week, Scienteers!

There is something to be said for persistence, Sciencers. It can be very difficult to keep focused on one project for a prolonged period of time, especially if there doesn't seem to be any fruitful progress as time goes on. Nonetheless, when it comes to science and research, you must always keep at it, no matter what doubts you have, especially if those doubts stem from outside forces. For example, someone this week insulted my research methods! I could hardly believe it myself, but they said they thought my research methods were "inhumane" and "dangerous", and "damaging to our society", can you believe that? Nonetheless, I persevered, and I have some great progress to show you all this week thanks to it!

-

The Crimson Quartz (designed by Tiana Sidhe):

A slight, robed figure stepped out from behind a nearby tree, stalking over to the ball of fluff and kneeling down. "Fuzzkuk, Putoaa hoihlalryc uiysu!" The voice was gentle even as it scolded. Sihra could only stare as it turned to look at him. As its hood was drawn back, he beheld something he'd never thought he'd ever see again: a female Faekinde!

"Gu joaa." When Sihra only gave her a confused look, she asked, "Udguuty?"

"You are... Faekinde, like me...?" It was all he could think to say. She looked like his kind...

A light seemed to light in her eyes, and she nodded. "Well, yes. I thought I was the only one."

Sihra smirked. "I thought I was." He tried to stand, but found himself sinking into the muddy pond. The girl offered him a hand out, which he thanked her for once he was back on firm ground.

The girl picked up the fluffy creature, cradling it in her arms. "My name is Tian, and this is Fuzzkuk."

"Mine is Sihra," the boy offered, smiling sweetly. He felt water hit his head, and looked up to see rain clouds rolling in. "We'd better find shelter," he declared, taking Tian's hand and half-running with her toward a nearby cave.

That was quite the unusual turn of events, wasn't it? I have to admit that with each passing day, I am more and more grateful that I didn't resist the allure of studying this EI! At any rate, I will have more results of my findings with this EI next week, and I will also have some news regarding our AEI friend, Hero's Journey! Of course, last week we were faced with yet another decision for our unfortunate protagonist, Vander. Mason the mercenary wanted to travel east to Voleur Den, but Lapbie, the zombie minion of Sable the necromancer, said that they should travel west to get to Voleur Den. After a close-run vote between the two options, Gaians decided to listen to Mason and go east! Now that a decision has been reached, I can get back to my research, no matter what some people may think of my methods. I'll have more news for you next week. Until then, Scienteers!

Greetings once again, Sciencers! It has been a trying week for me, or at least that's what I'd like to say, if I'd been present for the majority of it! That probably sounds ridiculous—and, from an outside perspective, I would absolutely agree with you—but scientific research has a funny way of making you discover the unbelievable, and then proving that it really did happen in the first place. I will explain that story to you later, though. First and foremost, I want to explain the incredible progress that our REI friend has made in the past week!

-

The Crimson Quartz (designed by Tiana Sidhe):

Thankfully, it was relatively dry inside the cave. The two ventured further inside, pulling aside vines as they went. The rain soon let up, and cracks in the cave's ceiling allowed the sunlight to seep in, showing an intricately carved wall depicting other Faekinde and what appeared to be...a shard of crystal?

"What does it mean, all those funny marks?" Tian asked as she looked over the symbols surrounding the mural.

"This is all writing," Sihra said with a small amount of pride. "My Teacher taught me how to read them." He looked up, intoning:

Upon the joining of the Three
That which was broken can be healed
By Faekinde only can this be
Here the Song shall to them reveal

He remembered his Teacher's words, and pulled out the twin flute. As the notes of the Song of Harmony sang forth, an answering tone came from the shard. It was the Sliver of Quartz he had been seeking! It came away from the carved wall with mild effort, still faintly glowing purple in his hand. As it did, its song lingered in his mind, the path further into the cave calling to him.

Things continue to progress down an unusual path with our friend here, do they not? I can only wonder where this path may lead in the future. Now, as I'm sure you've noticed by the absence of my talking about it, I don't have an update for our experimental AEI, Hero's Journey this week. The reason for that is the story I mentioned earlier. You see, I got caught up in a whole lot of research that I simply could not look away from, no matter how much I wanted to attend to my other projects. I mean that literally, of course. This particular specimen I'm researching managed to make it impossible for me to look away for several days! Imagine my surprise when I found out that it had been a full three days of no eating, drinking, sleeping, or breathing! At least, I assume that's what happened, for as little sense as that makes from a scientific standpoint. Nonetheless, I've decided to leave that project alone for a while, for my own safety, and the productivity of my other research subjects. I will have more to report next week. Until then, Scienteers!

08 EI Report: The Crimson Quartz and Hero's Journey!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: The Crimson Quartz and Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Apr 08, 2016 9:45 pm

Hello once again, science lovers, and welcome to the Evolving Item Report! In spite of poor weather and a number of unexpected developments, I am pleased to say that I am still alive and in one piece. Not that you needed to worry about whether or not I would be alive, of course! There is always a risk involved when it comes to scientific research, but I doubt that most scientists would take risks at the level I do. It is important to be willing to do what others won't, if we are to make true scientific progress. Of course, I have heard talk about my methods and what people think of them, but I won't let outside opinions sway me too much. There is work to be done and there are things to be learned, after all! For example, without my totally safe and healthy research practices, we wouldn't have these new findings:

-

The Crimson Quartz (designed by Tiana Sidhe):

The two Faekinde went further into the cave, little Fuzzkuk yapping along ahead of them. As the sunlight behind them faded, a red glow ahead rose to show them the way. At a fork in the path, Sihra again played the Song of Harmony. From the left path came a matching tone, deeper than that which the Sliver had made.

Soon enough, the cave opened out on a vast Chamber, the path ending at an outcropping. In the middle of the room hung a huge crystal. Could this be the Crimson Quartz? A triangular hole in the intricately carved roof showed the three suns as they slowly crawled through the sky, gradually coming together in the prophesied Celestial Alignment.

Sihra hesitated as he looked across the expanse. How could he possibly reach the Quartz from here? If he jumped, he might fall down into the shaft of air and fire over which the Quartz hovered.

Tian looked to him, her hand out. "Here, let me have the Sliver. I have an idea."

Sihra handed it over, still wary. His eyes widened as Tian backed up, a pair of gossamer wings emerging from under her cloak! She ran quickly, launching across the gap, the wings helping her stay aloft long enough to land on the Quartz.

Hero's Journey:

"EAST!" the fighting stopped as the small farmhouse fell silent. "I pick east, okay?!" Vander repeated once more.

Mason struck a confident pose as Sable slunk to the side of her summon to give Lapbie a consoling hug. If it were possible for an undead monstrosity of nature to be heartbroken, he surely was. "Sorry little guy..." Vander admitted, "I just think Mason seems to have a knack for this kind of thing."

"You've got that right, kid! I know this whole area like the hilt of my blade. Now, it's hardly a stone's throw that way and we'll soon discover Voleur Den. Great place for a cutpurse to grab a bite, or so I hear." the mercenary shuffled his feet a bit, eager to get on their way.

Ironically, the mistress of all things dark and eerie was the most chipper of the bunch. "Lapbie and I are coming along then. This will prove to be an interesting venture, don't you think?" she squeezed the bunny tighter and Vander heard a sickening squish. Almost cute, but mostly horrifying.

The motley gang took to the path with a newfound vigor. Vander expected to be a bit more beleaguered after this long day of trials, but there was still some daylight to salvage and some roads to tread. Until he found Aidah-- and after he got back his wallet-- Vander refused to give up! But as they walked, he felt more and more lost. Perhaps Lapbie had been on the right track after all... The team decided to make camp for the night. Around the fire, they discussed their plan of attack, for Mason assured the gang that the den of the thieves was heavily patrolled.

Should they try their stealth against that of the sneakiest scoundrels around? Or perhaps they should go in guns blazing and launch a full attack against the lot of sniveling swindlers?

See? Now, regardless of what anyone may or may not say about my research methods, you cannot deny that they consistently provide results and new findings. The REI seems to be progressing smoothly, and I look forward to what new information I'll have discovered by this time next week! Our AEI friend though...he has proven to be more experimental, and admittedly unpredictable for it. As always, I'm going to need your help to determine where my research should push Hero's Journey to go next, so please do take some time to let me know what completely harmless and non-life-threatening experiments the AEI should undergo next. Until next week, Sciencers!

15 EI Report: Finale of The Crimson Quartz!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: Finale of The Crimson Quartz! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Apr 15, 2016 4:01 pm

Hello once more, Scienteers and welcome back to the Evolving Item Report! It almost seems as though this week has passed by faster than physically possible, in some respects, but time does not ever stop, not even for science! Except for when unusual science is involved, I suppose. We try not to get involved too heavily in that aspect of science for very long, though. The last time I tried studying that I ended up losing a week without getting much of anything done at all, and while it's fascinating to study, I have far too many research projects to juggle to risk losing any additional time. But, I must say it does feel nice when the time and effort put in to a project comes to fruition, and that's exactly what has happened with our REI friend here.

-

The Crimson Quartz (designed by Tiana Sidhe):

The three suns reached their peak, uniting in a blinding white light which pierced down into the Crimson Quartz. Tian raised the Sliver, the light glinting through it, then plunged it into the hole whence it had forst been broken. Sihra gasped as a shock of power pulsed from the Quartz, purifying it but also throwing Tian away!

He ran back down the path quickly, taking the other path and coming out on the Chamber floor. He checked on Tian, who looked dazed but mostly unharmed.

From the Quartz came a voice, gentle and low. "Thank you, brave Faekinde, for restoring that which had been taken. The Quartz of Truth is once more whole. Make your world in its light."

For as exciting as it can be to see a story come to its conclusion, it still leaves a bit of a void to no longer have that project to research. Ah well. Onward and upward, as they say! The bright side is that there will always be more science to be studying and research to be doing. Speaking of which, I suppose now is a good time to return to our AEI friend, Hero's Journey! Last week, I asked you which method Vander, Mason, and company should use when entering Voleur Den, and after some deliberation it seems that Vander and crew will sneak in to Voleur Den to catch the thief! Now that a decision has been reached, I will get to work on my research, and I'll report back to all of you next week. Until then, Sciencers!

29 AEI Report: Hero's Journey!Edit

Greetings once again Scienteers! I apologize for my lapse in last week's report—I made the near-fatal mistake of once again looking at that side project that made me lose track of time. And, well, everything else. I'm not sure how I survived it, strictly speaking. The human body isn't normally able to withstand an absence of water for that long, and yet here I am, still alive. Of course, it did take a few days to recover, once I managed to escape its grasp, but once again I really ought to hold myself to not studying that particular experiment for a long while, if ever again. In the meanwhile though, our friend the AEI has made good progress, and I'm happy to share the findings with you!

-

Hero's Journey:

The stealth mission into Voleur Den seemed the smarter choice, and Vander only had to shoot Mason down once about charging into the den before the mercenary relented. Instead, they crept into the den, and found that sneaking their way in was...easier than expected. In fact, there were no thieves around at all, save for one—the girl. She was sitting on an old looking sofa, and next to her there was a small pile of belongings. As soon as Mason spotted the thief, he scowled and marched right up to her.

"Oh brother. HEY. What did I tell you about stealing things from other people?! You can't just take money from people like that and then run." With a smirk, he added, "At least not without giving me a heads up first when you do it."

The thief scowled back and looked away from him with a snarl. "Whatever. It's not my fault that you couldn't keep up. Maybe if you focused less on muscle and more on moving, you would have caught up to me sooner."

Vander stared at the both of them, mouth ajar. When he didn't react, Mason let out a loud, warm laugh that echoed around the chamber, then turned back to face Vander. "Sorry for all the trouble. My sister likes to grab things from people and bail sometimes. She's gonna return what she took from you back now though, and we'll help you find your missing friend to make it up to you. Isn't that right, Madeira?"

Madeira the thief snarled, but begrudgingly got up and returned Vander's wallet to him. Vander was relieved to discover that not only was his wallet still intact, but all of the money he'd had was still inside it. He looked at the remaining pile of items, increasingly certain that none of them belonged to her in the first place. Mason looked at the pile and seemed to think the same. "What about all this other stuff? Where did you get this all from, who does it need to be returned to?"

Refusing to make eye contact with Mason, Madeira said nothing. She shuffled her feet across the ground, then finally muttered, "Doesn't matter."

Vander ignored their conversation in favor of staring at a locket in the pile, one that he knew he'd seen on more than one occasion. He finally raised a hand, and the siblings stopped speaking, both looking at him with surprise. "That locket. It's Aidah's. Where did you get it? Where did you find that?!"

Madeira stared at it, then shrugged. "Dunno, some white-haired guy had it, I just took it because it looked shiny and I wanted to keep it for myself, ya know..."

Madeira kept talking, but Vander tuned her out. His options were to try and find clues leading to the creature that had captured Aidah, or try to find this white-haired man that somehow had Aidah's locket. Both seemed like they could lead to Aidah, or they could send him on a wild goose chase. No matter which, it was going to be an uphill battle, but with his wallet back, Lyel at his side, and now Mason and Madeira helping him out, he felt like at least he might stand a chance. He just had to decide what to do.

Once again it seems that our unfortunate hero is still struggling, but for once it seems like he may just stand a chance going forward! However, ultimately the choice is once again in your hands, Sciencers. You're going to have to decide what path Vander and the party should take, and once that decision is made, I will invest more time to test out my totally safe and not questionable experiments. Until then, I'll keep an eye on some of my other research projects...but not the one that got me caught in a time loop. I'll leave that one alone for a while. See you next week, Sciencers!

06 AEI Update: Hero's Journey!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Update: Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri May 06, 2016 8:00 pm

Hello once again, Scienteers! It has been a busy week to say the least, and while I cannot share any of the progress I've made on my scientific endeavors at this time, I hope you will take my word for it when I say that I may have made some of the most monumental progress of any researcher of this day and age! Of course, maybe I shouldn't get too far ahead of myself, but given that I was able to finally wrangle in that project that kept making me lose days of my life, I would say I am getting closer to a real scientific breakthrough in the near future! Granted...if my theory doesn't work out the next time I try it, then I'm back to the drawing board, but we'll have to see. That's not what I'm here to talk with you all about, though. It appears that a decision has been reached with regard to our AEI friend, Hero's Journey! In case you missed last week's update, here is a recap for you.

Last week, I asked you all to once again decide the fate of our unfortunate hero and his slowly growing party as they try to save Aidah. After what seems like very little deliberation, you all appear to have reached a consensus about what the team should do next! From here, Vander and the team will try to find the white-haired man! Of course, this leaves me a lot of work to do as far as experimentation goes, but the bright side is that I think I can put off my other project for a little while, now that I think I've finally found a breakthrough! We'll see what that project has in store for me later, and I'll be back next week with an update on our AEI friend. Until then, Sciencers!

13 AEI Report: Hero's Journey!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Report: Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri May 13, 2016 11:19 pm

Greetings, Scienteers, and welcome to another wonderful week of the Evolving Item Report! I have been focusing very intently on my research projects in the hope that more results will come as quickly as the ones that I've had in recent weeks, but I do believe that I've started to hit the slump that comes with research, where one goes through long periods without any new information or change in perspective. Nonetheless, the brightest and most well-respected of scientists have taken to these lulls with constant vigor and continued determination, and I certainly don't intend to quit on them now! There has been some progress that I can report though, such as with our AEI friend, for example, and that will be the focus of my presentation today!

-

Hero's Journey:

"We have to find this white-haired man, then. If he had Aidah's locket, then he's got to know something about where she is," Vander said. "We need to find this guy and figure out what he knows, before it's too late. She could be anywhere right now, so the sooner we find someone who can help us find her, the better."

"So where did you run into this guy, Madeira?" Mason asked, looking at her quizzically. "He doesn't sound like someone who's from the town, where did you run into this guy? Was he staying at the inn or something? We should figure out where to go to find him—"

"Or else, he can find you himself."

The trio spun around to face the entrance to Voleur Den, where a white haired man stood, two normal eyes staring at them, the third eye on his forehead that didn't move, but stared at the space between them. "I understand that you're trying to find someone. I think I can help you with that."

"Who are you? How did you get here? How did you find this place?!" Madeira asked, taking a few steps back to put Mason between herself and the white-haired man.

"Bold words coming from someone who grabbed a locket out of my pocket and then turned tail and ran when I noticed that it was happening," the man replied. He ignored Mason as Mason's hand tightened around the handle of his blade, and instead looked directly at Vander. Even the third eye appeared to stare Vander down. "So, what will it be?"

Vander stared at the man, deep in thought. If the man did know where Aidah was, then the help would be perfect, but something about the man left him unsettled. He found his way to Voleur Den without so much as a map to find the place, and that was saying nothing about the eye on his forehead that was giving Vander the creeps. Either option seemed dangerous, but time was running out for Vander to choose.

It looks like our unfortunate protagonist has once again found himself in an uncomfortable position. As with previous updates, this is the part where I am going to need your help, to decide which end this road leads to! I'll be back next week to report what decision you've made, and until then, keep up your studies!

Hello once again Scienteers, and welcome to the weekly EI Report! ...Or at least, that would be the case, if not for the fact that I don't really have a report for you so much as an update! I've got a rather huge presentation I have to give next week of my findings on one of my projects that's eaten up much of my time in the recent past—and also, I must admit with a bit of pride, I have been asked to give a speech on the dangers of improper safety and handling when in the lab. Of course, the people who invited me to give this speech may well have done so with the hope that I would denounce some of my own methodology in the process, but science and progress cannot be hindered by their concerns. My methods are perfectly ethical and totally not harmful. But, at any rate, the preparation for this presentation and speech means that the next report I will have for you all with regard to our AEI friend Hero's Journey will not be next week, but the week after, so you can expect to hear from me on Friday, June 3rd! In the meanwhile, if you didn't catch last week's report, here's what you missed:

Either option seemed dangerous, but time was running out for Vander to choose.

Last week, I asked you all to help guide the decision that Vander would make, and now that the voting period has ended, I can announce that you all resoundingly voted for Vander and crew to trust the white-haired man! You are all a very trusting group of individuals, it seems. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, of course! At any rate, I must get back to my preparations, but I will have a proper update for you regarding our AEI friends in two weeks' time. Until then, Sciencers!

EI Report

Hello everyone! It seems that Dr. Singh got lost on her way back from that presentation she had to give, and we have yet to locate her! It’s possible that she decided to try some rogue researching while traveling, but we’re gonna hope that’s not what happened. We’ve sent out a search party to locate and rescue her, but in the meanwhile we’ll have to postpone this week’s EI Report. Sorry for any inconvenience!

10 AEI Report: Hero's Journey!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Report: Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:17 pm

Hello again, Sciencers, and welcome to the almost weekly EI Report! My severe apologies for not being around for last week's report. My presentation went very well, I was very pleased with the resulting conversation that ensued after the presentation, as the scientific community has been buzzing about it ever since! Or at least, I have to assume as much. I haven't actually been around to hear about it. I somehow ended up on the incorrect flight back from the scientific convention, and from there a series of events that would take me far too long to detail right now occurred, leading to me ending up in Nepal instead of making my way back home! Nonetheless, I am back now, and I have some fascinating news with regard to our AEI friend, Hero's Journey!

-

Hero's Journey:

"We'll trust you, of course," Vander said, after a prolonged pause. He didn't necessarily like the thought of trusting a stranger, but he'd already trusted three others as it were that day, and ultimately he needed to find the beast in order to save Aidah. Nothing else mattered but that, until she was safe. So he set aside his discomfort and nodded to the white-haired man. "So...who are you? How do you know where the beast is?"

"My name is Lupus, and I come from what once was a village far from here. That beast ravaged my home, razed the village, and left me the lone survivor of my people. I have been hunting the beast since that day, and I intend to have my revenge on that monster no matter what it takes. It works out for both of our sakes that you're looking for the beast as well, as allies will only make this fight easier than it would be otherwise. Come now, I will guide you to the beast's lair so we can defeat it once and for all."

"A village far from here, eh? Razed to the ground? Curiousssssssss, fufufufufu~"

Vander spun around and stared at Sable the necromancer, who stood next to Mason. He hadn't realized that Sable had come with them to Voleur Den, so the mere sound of her voice had startled him to move. However, before he could reply to Sable's remark, Mason said, "Hey, if we're gonna fight this thing as a group, shouldn't we go into town to get supplies and equipment first? I'm sure I can handle the fight as-is, but considering Vander needed healing just from hopping over a wall earlier today, we might want to do that first..."

"We have very little time to waste, if we wish to have an advantage against the beast," Lupus replied, eyes narrowing as he glared at the group. "We must move with haste."

Vander sighed. Another decision was not something he wanted to deal with, but it seemed that he'd have to think carefully. Aidah was in danger, he knew that much to be true. But could they beat the beast without additional supplies? Lupus seemed confident they could. The road in front of Vander once again split off in two directions, and he could only hope the path he picked was the right one.

Fascinating, no? It's going to be interesting to see where our intrepid heroes venture out next, and what they'll find when they get there. As always, I humbly request your input to help determine what totally ethical and not remotely harmful experimentation I put this AEI under next, and once a decision has been reached, I will get to it! Until next week, Scienteers!

Hello once again, Scienteers! I hope that the past week has treated you well! With my return to my own home and research laboratory, I've spent a lot of time catching up on projects that I could not properly attend to while away at the convention, and then in Nepal...I must say, while I didn't particularly mind the unexpected vacation across the globe, it was unplanned, and I was planning to return to some of these experiments sooner than I was able to, so a few of them gotten a bit out of hand. The bright side is that our AEI friend is still safe and sound, and now I've got direction on what to do with him next. In case you missed last week's EI report, here is a recap:

Last week, I asked all of you to once again help determine what path our unfortunate protagonist and his growing group of travelers should follow, and after some deliberation amongst yourselves, it seems that the consensus is that Vander and crew should get supplies and equipment first! I can understand being prepared for a dangerous situation, of course, but I must admit that I prefer a more gung-ho approach to things! This has, of course, led to jealous researchers claiming that my methods are "unethical" or "dangerous", but that's neither here nor there. I will get to work on a new trial of experiments based on your decision, and will have a report for you soon. Until next time, Sciencers!

01 EI Report: Monster! Project!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: Monster! Project! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jul 01, 2016 9:02 pm

Hello Sciencers, and welcome back to another thrilling edition of the Evolving Item Report! Before we get to the report proper, I do want to apologize to you all for the delay with our AEI friend, Hero's Journey. You see...my last attempts at perfectly safe and ethically acceptable experimentation did not go so well. Perhaps that's a bit of an understatement. I may or may not have lit part of my house on fire in the process. Everything is fine though, I promise! My house is currently being rebuilt, and I have relocated our AEI friend so that the experimentation can continue in a more safe location. However, in the process of moving everything from the remains of my house to their current location, two things occurred to me: first, I realized that I would not have time to finish my experimentation on the AEI to present to you all this week—again, my apologies—and second, I discovered this brand new gem of an REI!

-

Monster! Project (designed by sterek):

You tap your pen against the edge of the table. Your coffee is getting cold, but you don't let your eyes leave the teenager's face. You can't say you're surprised by the way he looks; "quirky" might be the nice word for it, but only because you don't know the proper term to describe a strikingly short and visibly socially awkward vampire whose braces give a slight lisp. He's exactly the way you pictured someone who would have exclusive information on Monster! Project. (What a stupid band name!)

"This," he whispers, solemnly holding your gaze, "is my prized possession." He places a thick binder on the table between the two of you. It's only when you notice a crumpled ticket stub peeking out from between the pages that you realize—it's a scrapbook. Oh. Oh no. Oh no, this is bad. The kid you convinced your boss was a serious source you found online...is a superfan.

"Fanclub president," he corrects you, reminding you that you were thinking out loud again. It's the exact moment you become convinced that you can kiss your career in journalism goodbye.

Off to a rocky start already, but can our protagonist turn this situation around? It will certainly be interesting to see what awaits us in the next installment! I must admit that I would really like to take this project home and experiment on it right when I get there, but given that parts of my house still have singe marks, that is probably an ill-advised decision on my part. Nonetheless, science progresses ever onward, and I intend to be at the forefront of discovery, so I'm going to figure something out to make it work. Until next week, Scienteers!

08 EI Report: Monster! Project!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: Monster! Project! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jul 08, 2016 9:00 pm

Hello Scienteers, and welcome to another exciting edition of the Evolving Item Report! This week has been full of many ups and downs for my research, as they're still working to repair the damage done to my home by that fire. Still, I have never been one to let environmental problems hinder the progress of my projects, and this will not be an exception! I do have some good news on that front, actually. I mentioned recently that I'd encountered some setbacks with the AEI, partly due to the fire, but in the past week I made significant headway! I am excited to share my findings with you, as they are big and there are several of them, but it's still in the process of changing, believe it or not, so that will have to wait for next week! For now, though, this new REI has also kept me busy, and has made some interesting progress itself:

-

Monster! Project (designed by sterek):

"But you do know them," you insist. "Right? That's what you said on the phone." The little vampire nods, sipping from a juice box that you sincerely hope is filled with actual juice. It takes him a moment to realize you're expecting him to elaborate.

"Ah, well...let's start with Kyle, ok? That's the frontman, by the way. The singer."

You resist the urge to roll your eyes. Granted, maybe you don't dabble in serious journalism just yet, but you had the decency to do some basic research before accepting this assignment. Besides, you'd have to live under a rock not to know Kyle. Anyone with at least one eye would recognize the slime-skinned boy anywhere given how many magazine covers he's already appeared on. You suppose you can see the appeal. From a professional standpoint, of course.

"Kyle had to be bribed to join the band," the vampire continues. "In fact, he threatens to quit about once a month because he knows they couldn't do it without him. He's kind of a di—" You stop scribbling on your notepad, and he quickly corrects his sentence before you can quote him verbatim. "Kind of a jerk."

You smile. "I don't know a single rockstar who isn't."

This band sounds very unusual, to say the least, doesn't it? I'm curious to see just where things go from here, and I hope that you all are as well! I will be back next week for another mostly full report of my completely ethical and totally harm-free research findings. Until then, Sciencers!

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: Monster! Project! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jul 15, 2016 9:00 pm

Hello Sciencers, and welcome back to another exciting issue of the Evolving Item Report! I have to be upfront with all of you about the importance of knowing when to quit. As you have likely gathered from things I've told you all over the years, I am not one for giving up on things, even when it seems like it is the most obvious choice in the world. We must be stubborn and resilient, as scientists, to make sure that we continue to make headway and progress into the future regardless of all else...but I feel that if you've experimented on something enough that it sets fire to a building more than once, it may be time to try a different sort of experimentation, or else to switch careers. I have opted to stay in my current career, of course, but I do think that it may be time to pursue a different path of study for that particular research project. While I try to restore my hair and eyebrows to their usual states, here is an update from a different project of mine:

-

Monster! Project (designed by sterek):

"You have to give me something more interesting than that." The words escape your lips before you can soften the blow, effectively interrupting the vampire halfway through his list of inane facts you could care less about. You can't help it; you really thought this kid had some valuable information that would land you a spot on the front page. That's how he made it sound on the phone, at least.

He stammers. "W-Well...how about Nozomi? The drummer."

Surely there has to be something interesting to report about her, you think. How does a tiny, timid little cyclops girl like her manage to channel this much aggression on a drumset? She must have a secret, and the darker the better.

"Oh, she does!" The vampire's face seems to light up at the suggestion. "I'm not sure what is it, but she definitely does."

You stare at him, one eyebrow quirked to show just how unimpressed you are. "Amazing. Thanks for the reliable information."

It seems that our intrepid reporter is having less of a time from this than he'd hoped. I suspect there are new surprises waiting around the corner yet, though, so we'll have to wait and see what comes of it from here, won't we? Until next week, Scienteers!

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: Monster! Project! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:03 pm

Greetings Scienteers, and welcome to another riveting Evolving Item Report! Before we get to the report, though, I have a life lesson that I want to share with you all today: the value of research. It is so tremendously important to research everything you see and do, so that you can really, truly know what it is you're experiencing! The best scientists are all people who research meticulously. Some people will tell you not to take things too far, but I don't think it is possible for you to over-research. For example, when I was in school I was so intrigued by students sticking gum on the underside of their desks that I did a school-wide evaluation of the phenomenon. I spent the greater part of a week tracking how many pieces of gum were stuck to each individual desk before teachers told me to stop, but I got the results I wanted in the name of science! And speaking of results, check out the results on our REI friend!

-

Monster! Project (designed by sterek):

"So far you've only given me already obvious facts and baseless rumors," you tell the vampire, voice heavy with exasperation. "Claude," you supply, figuring you can try to nudge him in the right direction. "What about them?"

"Ah!" He perks up again, which you hope is a good sign. "I do have some pretty good information, yes."

You gesture at him to go on. At this point, you're suspicious that he's purposely withholding the so- called good information just to irritate you.

"For instance, you know how they're super moody all the time? There's a reason for that. You see, they originally auditioned to be the singer in the band. They're still not over Kyle stealing the spotlight."

You sigh. Nobody missed the very clear animosity between the two band members, so you can hardly build your article around that. Sure, maybe you didn't know about Claude's first audition, but you sincerely doubt anyone would be surprised to read that they didn't let a banshee front a rock band. (Bassist, though? That's a pretty harsh downgrade.)

Our intrepid reporter does not seem to be having a great time with this person. Are there more secrets hidden in this band than meets the eye? We'll have to wait and see to find out, I suspect! Until next week, Scienteers!

Greetings once again Sciencers, and welcome to another riveting installment of the Evolving Item Report! It has been a trying week for me, or at least that's what I'd say if I'd felt like I was present for the majority of it! That probably sounds ridiculous, and, from an outside perspective, I would absolutely agree with you—but scientific research has a funny way of making you discover the unbelievable, and then proving that it really did happen in the first place. I got so caught up in my research that it hardly felt like any time at all passed! A whole week happened at some point there and I can hardly believe it, even though I'm almost certain I stopped to eat and sleep at some point in that time. It is probably a bit concerning that I can't remember. Nonetheless, I do have the joy of reporting that our REI friend has made progress in the past week!

-

Monster! Project (designed by sterek):

"All right." You put your pen down and lean over the table. "Last chance, kiddo. Tell me you have some dirt on Joey." You try to sound a little bit intimidating at the very least, but you only come off as horribly desperate. It will be a miracle if you don't get fired after you attempt to write an article with so little substance.

The vampire squirms in his chair. "I...don't have anything about him. I'm sorry. He's probably the most boring werewolf out there. And the most boring guitarist, too."

He starts to ramble about how painfully ordinary Joey is, but you tune him out, instead making a mental list of all the things you'll have to pack when your boss tells you to empty your desk come Monday. You can probably steal a handful of office pens for your trouble.

However, something the vampire says abruptly catches your attention. "I'm sorry—could you repeat that?"

He studies your face, a bit offended that you weren't listening. "I said there's nothing to gossip about because he's been dating Kyle since the band got together."

It seems like our reporter isn't getting anywhere they'd like to get to, but if nothing else I can happily say that the EI seems to be making progress. I'll have another update for you all next week! See you then, Scienteers!

05 EI Report: Monster! Project's finale!Edit

  • Icon announceAnnouncement EI Report: Monster! Project's finale! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Aug 05, 2016 9:00 pm

Hello once again Sciencers, and welcome to another exciting issue of the Evolving Item Report! This past week has been tremendously complicated for me, I must admit. The news of the Rejected Olympics being cancelled was disappointing for me—although I don't ever participate, it is nice to have constants when so much of my life is spent researching change! On the bright side, I hear there are slime creatures around town, and I would like to experiment on a few of them—for strictly scientific purposes and in completely ethical ways, of course—but as of yet they have eluded me, so I have reluctantly but gratefully kept my focus on the work at hand: the final evolution of the REI we've been on!

-

Monster! Project (designed by sterek):

After your meeting with the vampire, you spend all night crafting what you could easily call your journalistic masterpiece. It's juicy and almost downright salacious. You manage to write the perfect article to expose Monster! Project's biggest secret, the two band members secretly dating, and—

You stop typing. Do you really want to be the journalist who ends Monster! Project's international career over their private lives? As much as you wanted that scoop, it just doesn't sit right with you.

You highlight every word you've typed so far and press the backspace key. Shame that you have a conscience, really, because you could have had your fifteen minutes of glory and fame for that article. Dejected, you start writing again.

“MONSTER! PROJECT: ARE THEY REALLY SMUGGLING EXOTIC CREATURES WHILE ON TOUR? SOURCES SAY YES.”

You suppose you can understand why so many gossip columnists write completely made-up stories now. Long live Monster! Project, or whatever. Stupid band name.

A rather underwhelming end to a rather underwhelming interview, but it looks like while our intrepid reporter may not have discovered anything quite to match what they wanted, we've certainly discovered a beastly item in the process. Until next time, Scienteers!

  • Icon announceAnnouncement AEI Report: Hero's Journey! - [NPC] Dr. Singh Fri Aug 19, 2016 11:07 pm

Hello Scienteers, and welcome back to the somewhat weekly EI Report! It's been a long time since I've reported on this particular project of mine, and I'd like to apologize for that, but some projects are smooth and easy to keep track of, while others are tremendously difficult to stay on top of. This one has been a veritable goldmine of new scientific data, but the counter to that is because it's so different from my usual sort of research projects, it's very hard for me to keep track of it regularly, outside of monitoring changes! It probably doesn't help that I'm trying out some new methods of experimentation—totally ethical and not even a little bit dangerous to anyone involved, of course—but it has been a bit of a journey, to say the least! Now then, let's check in with our unfortunate protagonist and the state of his Hero's Journey!

-

Hero's Journey:

"We should really go get equipment," Vander said quietly. "I don't want to put things off any longer myself, but Mason is right, if we try to take on this beast without being properly equipped, then I don't think it will end well for us. It's been a long day for me as it is..."

Lupus scowled at the group. "There is no time to waste on this. Surely you can handle yourselves for one measly fight without extra equipment. If we waste too much time, then our chance to defeat the beast will vanish along with the beast itself!"

Mason turned to the man, frowning. "You just said yourself that this thing took down your entire village and left you as its lone survivor, and then followed it up by saying you've been hunting the thing for years, and now you're calling it a 'measly fight'? Listen—"

"Wait."

Madeira was the one who spoke, but she stared directly at Sable, a wary expression on her face. Vander couldn't quite place it until he looked over at Sable as well. She bore a wide, manic grin that made Vander about as wary as Madeira looked. By the time Mason looked over at Sable, the grin only grew wider.

"I knew that story sounded familiar. A village razed to the ground, one lone survivor...I think I know what you are. You're the beast, aren't you?"

Vander and Mason both looked from Sable to Lupus, startled. Lupus snarled and made an inhuman noise that echoed around the chamber, ringing in their ears as he started to become an unrecognizable creature. Vander's hands clenched into fists at his sides. On the list of worst days he'd had in his life, this day definitely took the cake.

I think a number of you actually anticipated that this would be what would happen, but I have to admit that as a researcher I was still taken aback by it! However, it was a big change for our intrepid adventurers, even if it's one that maybe they wished they didn't have to experience themselves. Unlike previous instances of our AEI friend, this time I won't require any voting, but that's mainly because it looks like a path is already in motion for our unfortunate protagonist! I will have a new update for you all soon! Until then, Sciencers!

Hello Sciencers, and welcome to another exciting installment of the Evolving Item Report! I have to admit that I come bearing a different sort of news than I'd previously anticipated, but exciting new world-changing discoveries don't wait for convenience, and this one is no exception! I'm sure that sounds like I'm speaking hyperbole, and perhaps I am, but you'll have to forgive my excitement, it's just that I always feel this way when new discoveries are made! So, without wanting to hold you up from seeing this new discovery for yourself, I will let you have a look and read a bit about it!

-

Usagi's Melty Kiss (designed by HxI):

He happened on the bunny by chance one night, on his way home from school. She didn't seem to take to the other people walking down the road, but it seemed that she trusted him to keep her safe and not hurt her. He was taken aback by the unusual color of the rabbit, but he couldn't help but find the rabbit fascinating to watch, as she hopped around him and then away down the road, and he chased after her before deciding that he had to bring her home to keep her.

That night, he slept peacefully as she nestled herself into an open box tucked into a corner of the room. Although he dreamt of many things, her eyes were on the moon, and what would come with sunrise.

Fascinating, right? I'm very interested to see where this story goes from here, but that is the beauty of science. I'm taking notes every step of the way and from here I'll decide what totally harmless and not even a little bit morally ambiguous experiments I should try out. I'll have another update for you all next week! See you then, Scienteers!

Greetings fellow scientists! I want to share another life lesson with you all today concerning the value of research. It is so tremendously important to research everything you see and do, so that you can really, truly know what it is you're experiencing! The best scientists are all people who research meticulously. Some people will tell you not to take things too far, but I don't think it is possible for you to over-research. For example, if you want to know about how specific people work, you should get to know them as thoroughly as you can, even if it runs the risk of having a restraining order filed. I'm not speaking from experience myself here, of course, I just—ahem. At any rate, I have more to report with regard to our new REI friend, so please hear me out.

-

Usagi's Melty Kiss (designed by HxI):

When the boy woke the next morning, it was in a daze. He'd nearly slept through his alarm, and only stirred after snoozing the alarm once, then twice, then a third time before a hand finally reached over and switched it off. It wasn't until he'd sat up and rubbed at his eyes that he realized that the hand that switched off the alarm wasn't his own. He looked around the room, then rubbed his eyes a second time, and then a third.

Standing in the center of the room was a girl.

He jumped out of bed and backed himself into a corner immediately. Despite the panic, his first thought was gratitude that she was dressed, given he lived with his parents, but when he finally spoke he managed something a little more coherent. "W-who are you?! How did you get in here? What do you want?"

She said nothing, but pointed at the now empty box tucked in the corner. When he put the pieces together he shook his head in disbelief. "That's...not possible. It was a rabbit! There's no way, that's not—"

A knock issued from the other side of his door, and he froze.

"Time to get up! I know you've snoozed that alarm three times already, but you've got school!"

He looked back and forth between the door and the girl, panicked. "U-Uh yeah, okay, I'm getting up, I'll be out in a minute!"

It seems that our REI friend has a bit of a dilemma on his hands. We'll see how this goes for him soon, I'm sure, but I have to admit that I don't know what to expect! This is why I encourage you to always do as much research as possible, that way you can know instead of not knowing. Until next week, Scienteers!

Hello once again Scienteers, and welcome to another exciting installment of the Evolving Item Report! I must admit something to you all, as I think it's important to know that it's something researchers of all experience levels...well, experience! Sometimes, I feel woefully unprepared for the things life throws at me. Be it speaking at a conference, researching a brand new species of which there only seems to be one existing member, having to explain to law enforcement officials that what I'm doing is totally harmless and safe for everyone involved...you never know what might come your way when you least expect it. The best thing you can do is keep your wits about you and always have an intrepid mind! Take this week's REI for example:

-

Usagi's Melty Kiss (designed by HxI):

The boy frantically threw on his school uniform, then turned to tell the girl to hide somewhere so he could open the door without freaking out his parents...but she was gone. He rubbed at his eyes, looked around the room several times, then shook his head. "I knew I was tired, but I didn't think I was that tired..."

He reluctantly grabbed his backpack and made his way downstairs, moving as quickly as he could muster to make sure he wasn't late. He ate breakfast, went to the bathroom to brush his teeth and hair, grabbed his lunch, then headed out to walk to school, but when he opened the front door he nearly jumped out of his skin. He was greeted by the same girl he'd seen in his room only a few minutes earlier, but this time she had a school uniform on.

"I...how...who are you..."

She didn't say anything to him, but smiled and tilted her head.

With a sigh, he shook his head and stepped outside. It was going to be a long day.

Our REI friend doesn't quite have his wits about him, but hopefully as this unexpected adventure progresses, he'll be able to adapt to the situation more effectively, and who knows? Maybe he'll discover something that the world of science could stand to know! We'll just have to find out, won't we? Until next time, Sciencers!

Hello Sciencers, and welcome to another riveting edition of the Evolving Item Report! It's been a busy week for me, as I've had a number of totally ethical and reasonable experiments go even better than I could have previously hoped! Of course, this means that there are even more experiments that must be undertaken for the sake of science from here, but progress must never be inhibited for a moment, even by the excitement of success! That's not a problem for me, though, as the excitement is spurring me on to discover even more new and incredible things! And speaking of discoveries, let me show you how the progress of our REI friend is going!

Usagi's Melty Kiss (designed by HxI):

He couldn't keep focused at all during school. She'd taken a seat on the other side of the room from him and no one seemed to notice—he kept shooting glances over at her and wondered how it was possible that no one else in the room was paying her any mind. Even if he hadn't had the surreal experiences he'd had that morning, he couldn't just overlook her very obvious hair color. He did what he could to keep himself focused on school, but from one class to the next, there she was, waiting in a seat across the room, seemingly oblivious to everyone and everything.

It wasn't until right before lunch when she made eye contact with him—it was a knowing look, one that told him that she knew exactly how unsettled he felt, but wasn't going to do anything about it—and it was over as fast as it began. He had to hurriedly catch up with the rest of the class on the reading, and cover for the fact that he'd been asked a question without realizing it. All the while, she looked straight ahead.

When he went to confront her and figure out what was going on after the class ended, she'd vanished once again, and just like before she'd disappeared, no one seemed to notice she'd been there in the first place.

It seems to me that our REI friend has encountered a number of struggles during this encounter, but I suspect what he considers to be a struggle has only just begun. What does this mystical rabbit girl have in store for him? We'll just have to find out, won't we? See you again next week, Scienteers!

30 EI Report: Usagi's Melty Kiss!Edit

Hello once again Scienteers, and welcome to another exciting edition of the Evolving Item Report! With fall having finally set in, it has become even more crucial than ever to be as in-depth as possible with all of my research projects and materials. For example, the amount of sunlight each project might get per day will only get smaller as daylight gets shorter, so we have to know what impact that will have on an experiment, or if I try something that is perhaps less...standard procedure, shall we say, we have to be aware of the temperature and lighting of the surrounding areas at the time! But this is all totally harmless and perfectly safe, of course. At any rate, let's move on from that subject, and instead talk about our REI friend, shall we?

Usagi's Melty Kiss (designed by HxI):

By the time he was able to leave school for the day, he'd become paranoid. Everywhere he went, he could see her. She was sitting in one chair or another in all of his classes, she was one table over from him when he sat down to eat lunch, she was relaxing on the bleachers during PE, and despite his locker being at the end of the row at the end of a hall, she hovered halfway down the row of lockers and opened one as though it had been hers all along.

When the final bell rang, he bolted out the door as fast as he could, looking for anywhere he could go to get away from her, at least long enough to give himself some time away from her. He settled on a nearby arcade that he normally spent time at anyway, to clear his mind and give himself something to distract him, but not a few minutes after he decided on a shooter to play, she walked up, dropped some coins in the player 2 slot, and picked up the gun to play with him.

She passed a single glance in his direction, then turned to focus on the game.

He was so flabbergasted that he didn't realize until two rounds in that she was beating him, and by wide margin. He did notice her shirt, which was decidedly not the school uniform she'd worn earlier, but as they approached round 3 of the game, he refocused on his aim. The day wasn't getting any less weird, so he decided that if nothing else he'd try to make sure he didn't lose the arcade game.

As before, our intrepid protagonist is having quite the long and unexpected day! It seems that at least now he might be having some fun though. I don't know what's in store for our EI friend just yet, but I will be back soon with a fuller report for you all! Until next time, Sciencers!

Hello again Scienteers, and welcome to another exciting edition of the Evolving Item Report! Endings can be tricky, especially as you've compiled all of the research that a single project calls for and have to finish summarizing your findings. It's bittersweet in a way, reaching the conclusion of a long work, especially one to which you've dedicated much of your time, but also it is encouraging to know that you can then venture forth into new studies, and new research! So, with that in mind I want all of you to keep your heads high and smiles on your faces as I present the final evolution of our REI friend, Usagi's Melty Kiss!

Usagi's Melty Kiss (designed by HxI):

The two went on playing arcade games for a long while, but when he ran out of quarters, he decided to call it a night. She only stared at him as he walked away from the machine, and so he hoped that that would be the end of it, and went on his way, occasionally casting a glance over his shoulder to make sure that she wasn't following him home. It seemed that he was in the clear, and when he got home he made a beeline for his bedroom, to have a bit of peace and quiet by himself before it was time for dinner with his family.

He opened his bedroom door to find her sitting on his bed, staring right at him. He nearly jumped out of his skin, seeing her in his room after not seeing her anywhere at all, but he managed to hold back the yelp that threatened to come out of his mouth, and instead hissed, "Why are you following me?! How did you get up here?! Who are you?! What do you want?!"

She remained silent for a long while, until finally, she smiled at him. "To mess with you."

He stared at her, flabbergasted. "You can talk?!"

"Oh, sure. I've been able to talk this whole time," she replied, shrugging. "But it was fun seeing how long this whole thing could go on before a good moment to talk came up. Anyway, to answer your question, I'm actually a rabbit, but I became a fairy a long time ago by way of battling an ancient being and claiming its power as my own. Now I use that power to mess with people, like you for example! You saw me as a rabbit, you know, when you were walking home yesterday. You thought it'd be a great idea to just put me in a box and let me stay, wasn't that sweet of you?"

"This...this isn't happening," he said, shaking his head.

"Oh, it is," she said. "And I've been following you because you've got a curse on your head that I've got to take care of myself, right now!"

"N-no! That's not true, that can't be true!" he yelled, stepping back until he was pressed against the wall behind him.

She laughed. "Nope, it's not true, not even a little bit. There's no curse on your head at all. The other stuff, though...well, that might be true. How many people do you know who can appear and disappear at will, and only be visible to certain people, after all?"

His brain couldn't process everything she'd said at the speed she said it, and so finally he muttered, "Why?"

"Because I wanted to mess with you, I told you!" she replied with a wink. "Besides, it's not like you can tell anyone about this. They'll think you're crazy! So, now you get to live with this knowledge for the rest of your life, and no one will ever believe you."

"What did I do to deserve this?!" he finally demanded.

"Nothing at all! But that's life for you. Bye now!" She winked at him, and disappeared altogether.

He stared at the wall behind where she'd been sitting for a long while before he finally climbed into bed and pulled the blanket over himself, willing himself to fall asleep so he could be done with it. When he woke the next morning, there was a small bunny plush sitting on the ground next to his bed, and he shook his head and decided to never look at rabbits ever again.
