03 For those who received 2004 donation letters on January 1stEdit

  • Topic For those who received 2004 donation letters on January 1st - Posted: lanzer Mon Jan 03, 2005 4:20 am

Due to a bug in the donation system, all donations made on January 1st was granted the January 2004 donation letters. After much deliberation from the admin team we've decided that it's only fair to have all donation letters granted on January 1st to be converted back to January 2005 sealed envelopes.

At around 3am today, Gaia will be down for maintenance. During which time all the 2004 donation letters and items granted on January 1st will be converted.

We apologize for the confusion that this bug had caused.

PS - All January 2004 letters had been renamed to January 2005 letters to avoid confusion at the market place. After the conversion is over the old donation letters will be changed back to their original form.

21 Report System, Mod Structure, PM System Overhaul!Edit

Introducing the New Report System
And the PM System Overhaul
And the Permissions Rewrite
And Forum Helpers
And Mod Name Restructuring

So much stuff coming out at once! Though most of it is on the inside of Gaia, a lot of it affects everyone, so it is well deserving of an announcement post. In fact, so many things have changed that we're going to include images, pictures, and tutorials for using the new features, right here in this post! This series of changes is designed not only to help the moderators of the site be more effective when helping users, but also to empower our users to take action around the site.

New Moderator Classes User Moderation

New Moderator Class:: GAIA Helpers
We have added a new level of moderator known as the GAIA Helper. These are the users who you should contact regarding threads that are in the wrong forum / subforum. These individuals are capable of moving threads from one forum to another, and are often dedicated to the forums they frequent on a regular basis. Every GAIA Helper will have a moderator on the site who is responsible for their actions. Therefore, if you are in disagreement with the actions of a GAIA Helper it is best to contact a member of the administration team. Please of course, be sure to include any relevant PMs, thread links, and information that would assist us in the matter.

New Moderator Class:: Global GAIA Moderators
Taking over part of the role of our former General Moderators, the Global GAIA Moderators will be working with Abuse and Harassment cases, as well as being leaders for the Gaia Community and the moderating team. These individuals will continue to moderate the site much like before, but will be able to assist users across a variety of forums.

Renamed Moderator:: Omnimoderators
Okay, I won't lie to you, the name just sounded cool, and calling them "Gaia Account Issue Moderators" just didn't sound as interesting. Anyway, Omnimoderators focus on issues with users' accounts, especially when it comes to Hacking and Scamming reports. They will be the moderators who respond when these forms are filled out. They may also be moderators in some forums around the site.

Renamed Moderator:: Dedicated GAIA Moderators
The name change from Dedicated moderator to Dedicated GAIA Moderators reflects the slight reassignment in the moderator's duty on the site. Working with the GAIA Helpers around the site, Dedicated GAIA Moderators help to move threads that are in the wrong forum. Additionally, Dedicated GAIA Moderators are able to handle ToS violations in threads and posts, responding to someone's "Report This Thread/Post" (more on this in a moment). Much like they do now, when a Dedicated GAIA Moderators is free of obligation to their own section of the site, they are capable of moderating around GAIA.

Reporting System ToS Violation Handling

Gone are the days of sending PMs directly to mods when you find something that is against the ToS (links, pictures, etc). Instead, the entire site has been equipped with a reporting system. Report links around the site look like the following:

At the bottom of the main forum index:
[Report A Hacking]---------[Report A Scamming]---------[Report Abuse or Harassment]

Inside of a Thread on GAIA:

Inside of Guilds and Journals:

Future expansion of the system will allow for Art Arena and Signature reporting from users.

These links all provide access into the new GAIA Reporting System. The reporting system is reserved for reporting things that are only in violation of the GAIA ToS or a forum's guidelines. Spamming and Abusing the report system will result in being banned from the site. This also includes mules. Upon filling out the form, you will receive a reference number for your report. Keep this number in case you have any problems or concerns with how your report was handled. Additionally, this number uniquely identifies what was reported. Therefore, the same item cannot be reported twice. As a user, we ask you to be as complete and accurate as possible when reporting things, in order to help our moderation team.

PM System Overhaul

In order to build a robust reporting system, the Private Message System on GAIA needed to be rebuilt as well. The new version is faster, a bit more stable, and fixes some of the annoyances associated with the old system. Additionally, friendslist coloring is now in place, making it easier to find PMs from your friends. Moderators for the site are also appropriately colored, in order to help eliminate confusion and make it more difficult for users of the site to impersonate our staff.

For the curious, the 100% inbox rule will be in effect again, and should be activly trimming any PMs over your Inbox / Savebox limit.

Quoting for PMs is also fixed. Clicking "Post Reply" now also quotes the previous message by default.

Sentbox is self-pruning. There is no need to manage it anymore, as it will be handled by the system. Unfortunately, this means you cannot save messages from your Sentbox into your Savebox anymore. However, all old messages saved in this manner will be preserved.

Permission System Overhaul

Finally, the permission model on the site has been redesigned in order to make it easier for our site management structure to grow. This has been a slow integration project that started mid December, and should now be complete.

Well, that's everything for this update. Please help spread the word and educate our community about the new features and what they mean for the future of the site. Much more stuff is on the way!

How could I forget? There is also a EASIER, and BETTER way to PM online mods about:

Thread Moves
General Forum Stuff

It's not like the report system is the only solution.

Just click:
"View Forum Moderators"

On the forum index to get a list of moderators who are assigned to the forum and their current online / offline status. The best part is, the list is current and will be udpated as our moderating team assigns themselves to forums.

Frequently Asked Questions
(or Jakobo saw lots of Q&F Threads about this)

The Reporting System FAQs

Q: What exactly is the report system?
The report system is designed to replace the process where a user would PM an online moderator for a thread that is violating the Gaia Terms of Service. The ToS is located at: It is not designed for thread move requests, and it is not designed for reporting threads that break a forum's specific guidelines.

Q: So then, what can I report?
Take a look through the ToS (see above link) or the forum's guidelines often found in "Sticky" posts. If you cannot cite from the ToS or forum guidelines the item that is being broken, then the thread is probably not in violation of the ToS or guidelines, and should not be reported via this sytem. If you need some examples, do report:

PG-13 Violations (posting nude pics, porn, etc)
Abuse and Harassment (user in your thread abusing your patrons)
Mini Shops with Art Theft (copyright)
Intentional Trolling (see point #10)
Suicide Encouragement (see point #14)
Threads in violation of a forum's rules / wrong forum NEW

Q: What about spam?
Spam deserves its own FAQ, simply because of its complexity. If someone is spamming in your thread, with the intent to harass users of the thread on a persistent basis, then it is in violation of the ToS. If someone posts spam in the wrong forum, while it was wrong of them, and while it is still a warnable offense in some forums, it is not what the report system was designed for. Instead, we encourage you to contact an active forum moderator using the "View Forum Moderators" link. With our moderators signing up for their forums (not all have yet), and with the introduction of GAIA Helpers who will proactivly mod the forums for spam, wrong forum threads, etc, there will be little to no need to use the ToS reporting form. So then, what do you do about spam in a forum? PM a moderator from the View Forum Moderators list. There will ultimately be someone around that can help you with it. This section has now been removed as our report system is now capable of handing spam and wrong-forum reports.

Q: There are no moderators on!
Moderators who have marked themselves as hidden will not show as online. However, that does not mean they are unreachable. All of our GAIA Dedicated Moderators are capable of handling forum issues. As soon as the GAIA Helper system is fully in place, there will also be anywhere from 2-20 users in the forum who will be able to answer a PM and help keep the forums clean. Right now, it feels like there is nobody on, only because the system is somewhat new to our moderators as well. I promise, the lists will be getting bigger.

Q: How do I become a GAIA Helper?
GAIA Helpers are members of the forum committed to its success, capable of rational decisions, and have demonstrated to GAIA as a whole that they are capable members. This of course, means that there is no magic formula for becoming a GAIA Helper. Please, just don't ask, because nobody (mods or admins) has an answer for that question.

Q: Why did you create this system anyway?
During peak hours, the site has registered over 20,000 simultaneous users online. That's a huge growth I've seen ever since I first got here. Unfortunately, the tools at the disposal of our moderating team were old, outdated, or in many ways not existing. Being an effective moderator means needing a system that gives you all the information you need, in a well formatted result. When you fill out a report form, it gets dropped in a mod's inbox and looks like this:

Report Submitted By: USERNAME (USER ID)
IP Address:
Post Reported:

Reason Reported:
The reason you entered goes here.
Just like that, a moderator has who reported it, their IP (for cases of abusing the report form), the link to the item in question, and the reason it is being reported and is in violation of the Gaia ToS. This is a huge improvement when compared to:

can u move this thread it has pron (For those who can't get enough behind the scenes action, this was a legit PM I got back in July while an active site moderator.) By switching to a form that asks for exact information, no time is spent trying to gather information from the user- everything needed is right there. This is especially important for Hacking / Scamming cases, where there is a very specific set of information needed.

Q: When are Sigs and Art Arena Reporting coming?
The answer everyone hates is "when it is done", but I really don't have a better answer. We had a form ready for reporting a signature, but due to issues with implementation, deadlines for completion, and a moderating staff that will have their hands full with Thread / Post / Hacking / Scamming / Guilds / Journal / Abuse and Harassment reporting, we felt adding sigs and art arena were a bit too much. Some users did however find the sig report form, and therefore we had to remove it from the database. I'll spare the rambling about poking at features that aren't ready yet. Anyway, we are working on them, and will be taking care of it ASAP. Also, it is worth mentioning SECTIONS of Gaia can have GAIA Helpers as well. This includes Guilds and the Art Arena.

Q: What is this Reference Number thing?
Besides being a freakishly huge combination of letters and numbers, the Reference Number serves two purposes. First, it is a number associated with your report. When a moderator replies to your report, that number is auto-inserted into the reply. This is used for tracking purposes, for the benefit of our moderators (knowing what has been replied to) and for you (to keep track of your issue). Additionally, the Reference Number is a unique key assigned to a specific kind of report, and is used to prevent duplicate reporting of the same item. One of the biggest problems facing the moderating team is a single thread being reported by 10-15 users, and every mod spending time needlessly researching the same thread. Because it is 1 report per item, this problem has been solved.

PM System FAQs

Q: I keep getting false information about new PMs!
Yes, I know, and here is the technical reason why. The system keeps track of the number of new PMs waiting for you. When you view your inbox, all "new" PMs are set to "Unread". This is a behavior in PHPbb. In the PM system rewrite, for speed, the page begins loading before setting your New messages to Unread. The result is sometimes seeing the PM notification when there are no new PMs to see. While we are working to solve this, we need to trace the exact URL and point it is occuring on. We have narrowed it down to one of the following:
1) Somehow PM count is being increased without a PM being sent
2) PM count is being increased, PM system is lagging on the display
3) Some other thing I'm sure we will track down if given enough time.

Since it isn't causing site crashes, item loss, etc, it will be dealt with as soon as we can diagnose and approach the problem with a solution.

Other FAQs

Q: Why is everyone in my JOURNAL showing as a friendslist color?
This is related to the new permission model / new mod colors we put in place, and will be fixed as soon as possible. Once asgain, as it is not causing site crashes, mass grief, item loss, etc, it will be dealt with as soon as we can diagnose and approach the problem with a solution.

Dear Users,

We have been receiving reports of users being contacted by "fake admins" (such as VOatGAIA or LANZERatGAIA, etc) via AIM or other chat program asking for your password.

Please remember that Admins will NEVER ask you for your password for any reason whatsoever.

If anyone contacts you outside of your signup email or via PM and is asking for your password, it is probably a scammer and should be ignored.

Please take all steps necessary to protect your password.

Take care and best wishes,

01 January Fishing Contest Winners Deadline ExtendedEdit

  • Topic January Fishing Contest Winners Deadline Extended - Posted: VO Tue Feb 01, 2005 7:29 pm

Dear Users/Fishers,

Due to a glitch in the reset code, the Fishing Contest was not ended on at midnight yesterday. It is however, set to finish by midnight tonight. Therefore, the contest is hereby extended until midnight tonight. We are sorry for the incovenience, but there is no way we can actively go back and stop the event without messing up the scores. We have tried our best to find a fair solution, and we believe it is in everyone's best interests that we stop the event at midnight tonight in order to accurately get the scores without corrupting the database.

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

-Gaia Staff

13 Trading bug fixEdit

  • Topic Trading bug fix - Posted: lanzer Sun Feb 13, 2005 8:05 pm

Due to the database outage on Feb 11th the trading feature had been buggy and two sided item trades didn't work.

It took some time but the bug had been fixed now, sorry for the trouble.

15,000 trades happen on Gaia on a daily basis, and before yesterday's bug we were finding that 2 or 3 of which do fail. To ensure that nobody's items can be lost, we had just made furthur changes in the coding to tackle situations when trades do fail.

However, if you had experienced problems while trading items, please report to a moderator and we'll do our best to correct the problem.

PS - On top of that, we're adding new hardware to provide more stable and secure storage for your inventory. These changes will happen in the month of March.

GAIA Hangouts is a way for users to virtually "hang out" with one another.

To start a hangout with someone, simply view their profile. Towards the bottom of their info, you'll see "Click here to request to hangout." Doing so will send a hangout request to that user.

To accept a hangout session, click on "My Hangouts" on your profile page. Once accepted, you will both appear in the header together and you'll be able to send quick messages to each other as well as send hugs or kisses.

Stay tuned as we will be adding some more stuff for hangouts as soon as they are ready.

03 Gaia Homes are here!Edit

  • Topic Gaia Homes are here! - Posted: kaia9 Thu Mar 03, 2005 8:00 pm

Gaia Online is proud to announce Gaia Homes!
With Gaia Homes comes yet another extension to customizing your experience here on Gaia. Now, not only can you get and customize clothing and accessories for your avatar, you can also choose a house that you can customize with all sorts of stuff like furniture, lamps, accessories, wallpaper and carpet.

This is the new town in which you can find all your home's needs. It is located east of Barton Town. To get there, simply click on MAP in the navigation bar and click on the right arrow three times.

Crate & Apparel
Our newest clothing store. You'll notice that all of the clothing from each shop has been reorganized for this new release. Certain items that used to be in other shops may appear here.

The Faktori
The Faktori is where you'll be able to buy all of your home's needs. Within the Faktori, there are 3 shops along with 3 new NPC's. By default, you will be in Bildeau's room. He will sell you Wall and Floor tiles. To his right, Bloudeau will sell you all kinds of furniture. To his left, Ribateau will sell you wall dressings.

Aekea Housing Commission
In the Housing Commission, Josie will help you select a home. To get started, select a home style. If you choose to, you can then upgrade your home by 50%, of course that doesn't come without a price...

Getting Started with Gaia Housing
Here's a step by step process on how to get started with housing. Please take the time to read this guide, as it will help you understand what is going on each step of the way.

1. Select a Home Style from the Aekea Housing Commission.
There are currently three home styles to choose from, which determine the outside look of your house. All initial homes are free, and are the same size. Once you've received your home, you need to get furniture for it.

2. Purchase some furniture from The Faktori.
Head over to The Faktori and pick up some furniture to suit your style. Don't forget to get some tiles for both your wall and floor or you'll be stuck with a plain concrete interior.

3. Visit your profile and load up your Suitcase.
The profile has been revamped with this release, with a major new feature. Clicking on My Home will take you to your "Suitcase." Your suitcase determines what you are bringing with you into your home. You can load the furniture, tiles, and accessories that you just purchased, as well as normal items. You can even bring your friends' avatars with you!

One major note:
When an item is placed in your Suitcase (then in your home) it will become inaccessable on the rest of the site. Putting an item into your suitcase will "lock" it (you can tell if an item is locked if it appears to be grayed out). To access the item later(for vending, trading, selling, etc), you have to remove it from your suitcase which will effectively remove it from your home(if it were saved there). If an item is grayed out in either the Customize Me page, or the My Home / Suitcase page, it means that that item is either a) already equipped on your avatar or b) saved inside of your home. Also, if an item is grayed out *in* the suitcase, it means that it is an item that is currently saved in your house. You can unlock it by clicking on it, but remember that it will also remove it from your house as well.

  • Topic Gaia Homes are here! - Posted: kaia9 Thu Mar 03, 2005 8:01 pm

After your suitcase is loaded up, you can now enter your home by clicking on the Arrange My Home button below your suitcase. Before you do, please make sure you have Shockwave Version 10 installed in your browser. Once inside, you can now...

4. Customize your home.

Placing items in your room
Click the Inventory palette to view your items. Click and drag an item to place it in your house. Some items such as small lamps, plants and gaia general items can be placed on desks, tables, and shelves.

Rotating and removing items
Click an item to select it, then use the green rotate or red remove button. You may also drag an item out of your room and let go to remove it. Removing an item will put it back into your inventory palette.

Customizing floor and walls
Click Tiles and select which surface you want to edit. The three surfaces are left wall, right wall, and floor. Each tile may have up to 5 different tiling styles which can change the way a tile can affect the surface.

Adding you and your friends
Click the User Icon to open the friends palette. Drag you and your friends into your room.

Working with lighting
If you have a light in your inventory, place it in your room. Click View to switch to view mode and click on the lights to turn them on and off. Click the Global light icon to turn global lighting on and off. This is how your room will look when others view it.

Clearing your room
Click Clear Room to clear the contents of your room back into the inventory palette. This cannot be undone, so be careful when using this option.

Blend Mode
Click the Eye to make all your items transparent. Click again to make all items invisible, and again to return to normal. This is useful for arranging objects in your room without obstructing your view.

Saving your room
Click Save when you are happy with your design

  • Topic Gaia Homes are here! - Posted: kaia9 Thu Mar 03, 2005 8:06 pm

5. View your house and others.
The profile bar across the site has changed, with new smaller icons to represent the many aspects of your profile. For Gaia Housing, there will be a house icon in a user's profile bar if they have set up a house. Clicking on this icon will let you view their room!

6. We hope you enjoy Gaia Homes. As with any release, we will be working to fix any new bugs that may arise from this launch as swiftly as possible. Thanks for your patience and support!

A few users have been alarmed that they may be receiving a trojan or spyware when installing Shockwave. In actuality, you're not getting anything bad being installed in your system. Though, if you want to prevent any of the alarms of your anti-virus/spam blockers, follow these instructions.

When installing Shockwave, be sure that you do not let it install Google/Yahoo Toolbar. Toolbars are known to send info packets to whatever company created that toolbar. Your spam/virus blocker will most likely pick up these info packets and report them as a "trojan" or "data miner." As another user also pointed out, do not install the Weatherbug plug-in as well. That program communicates to another service which will also set off your spam/virus blocker in the same manner. Also, after Shockwave is installed, do not enable "automatic updates." If you do so, it wil periodically check for updates for your Shockwave plug-in which will also set off your spam/virus blocker.

If you are careful about the details on every page of the Shockwave Installer, you should never have to worry about getting "extra" stuff installed that you don't need.

Tonight at 12:00AM the forum area will be closed to repair the database problem. We're sorry the confusion that the problem had caused and the problem should be fixed within 30 minutes after downtime.

24 Introducing Shadow ForumsEdit

Introducing Shadow Forums

Shadow Forums are the latest and greatest thing for the Gaia Online Forums. The best part is, hopefully the introduction of them won't be noticable by many, but helpful to all. Shadow Forums are forums on Gaia that have a second "fake" forum listed elsewhere on the site. These "shadows" redirect to the main subforum for a given area. Here is an example of a Shadow Forum:

The Musicians subforum will now be listed under both the Art Discussion and the Music forums. Clicking on either of these subforums will take you to the real Musicians subforum, located in Art Discussion. This allows us to list the forum in both places people commonly look for it.

There will be the addition of a few Shadow Forums tonight as we roll out this system. The most noticably affected forums will be Anime/Manga/Comics and Music (since they share a few subforums). We hope that this change makes it easier for everyone to find the topics they are looking for on Gaia!

03 Hacking, decompiling Gaia flash games will result in banningEdit

  • Topic Hacking, decompiling Gaia flash games will result in banning - Posted: lanzer Tue May 03, 2005 4:22 am

Please note that the use of any decompiled flash clients, tools to increase profits, or tools to monitor network traffic are all considered as cheating. The use of any of these tools will result in immediate banning to all accounts related to the user.

Posting of results obtained from decompiling games on Gaia will also result in banning.

Recently there's been reports of cheats for the fishing game. As we receive reports about these exploits, cheats, or ways to earn gold easier, we will fix the games themselves to avoid these problems from happening. Though cheating in general is just a bannable offense anywhere within Gaia. Please think twice before attempting to hack into anything, for there won't be a second chance if you're caught.

13 Recent gold exploit and possible rollbackEdit

  • Topic Recent gold exploit and possible rollback - Posted: lanzer Fri May 13, 2005 5:04 am

As of May 7th there had been a bug which allowed users to earn gold at a very fast rate.

A lot of users had taken this opportunity to run bots and scripts to obtain a lot of gold. As a result, those users had a lot of gold to buy rare items and donation items at very high prices.

The problem had now been fixed, and all the accounts who took advantage of the exploit will be punished. However, the current prices of items in the market place had gone up by way too much.

We are currently scanning through the system to see if we can reverse the damage in a small scale. But if we cannot do that, then we will have no choice but to perform a 4 day roll back.

We are very sorry to all users who are affected by the current event. We are still working hard to seek a less drastic solution. Please stay tuned for more information.

  • Topic Recent gold exploit and possible rollback - Posted: lanzer Fri May 13, 2005 9:53 am

After the initial checking, it looks like there had been more than 80 million gold created due to the bug, with hundreds of accounts accumulated more than 20,000 gold. There are simply too many accounts to be reversed by hand.

At the same time, the bug only happened to half the users on Gaia, meaning that if we do not perform a rollback, half the users would be richer than the other half by millions of gold, and that is simply unfair.

A rollback is being prepared right now, and in a short moment, Gaia will be down while the rollback take place. User accounts will be restored to their state on May 9th. Other parts of Gaia such as the forums or art arena will not be affected by the rollback.

Compensation to all users is being calculated and the gold / items will be granted shortly after the rollback is complete.

Once again, I'm very sorry for having to do this to everyone. Appropriate measures will be done to prevent anything similar from happening in the future.

13 Rollback InformationEdit

  • Topic Rollback Information - Posted: Jakobo Fri May 13, 2005 6:45 pm

What is a Rollback
and what does it mean for my items?

Hello Everyone-

There have been a lot of rumors and speculation about the rollback process and what it means for everyone's gold, items, fishing scores, housing, and more. This is an FAQ designed to answer these questions and hopefully alleviate some of the confusion and mystery surrounding rollbacks.

Rollbacks occur when the administrative staff reset's an aspect of Gaia to how it was on a certain day. Think of it like a time machine. In this case, we will be going back in time to approximately 5:00 AM (pacific time) on May 9, 2005. The following pieces of Gaia will be going back in time:

  • Gold
  • Inventories
  • Game Inventories (fish caught)
  • Housing Suitcase

Additionally, in an effort to prevent item duplication, and item loss, we will be canceling all trades and marketplace items on an administrative level. This means that any items you have placed into trades will be returned, any items placed in the marketplace will be returned, and any bids placed on items will be returned.

Additionally, the following things will be affected by the rollback.

Gaia Online Forums, PMs / Disabled Sections
Unlike previous rollbacks, we expect to have the site up in an "economy frozen" state. During this time, the following features will be disabled:

  • Bank
  • Marketplace
  • Avatar Saving
  • Inventory
  • Gaia Fishing
  • Gaia HOMES
  • Stores (all towns)
  • Rare Events
  • Normal Gold Gain (lurking, posting)
  • Guilds

We expect the following non-gold systems to remain online during this time:

  • Gaia Online Forums (non-gold mode)
  • Private Messages
  • Hangout System
  • Gaia Journals
  • Memberlist
  • Profiles
  • All Moderation Tools

Donation Items
After the initial rollback, the administration team will be walking forward through the donation logs to resolve PayPal and mail-in donations that have occurred in the past 5 days. After the rollback has been completed, remaining donation issues can be resolved through the Gaia Online Feedback Form ( If you must complete a feedback form, please be sure to include your username, email used (if PayPal), and your transaction ID (if PayPal), so that we can track down your information in a timely manner.

New User Registration
During a small period of the rollback, we will be disabling user registration while we syncronize the new user information over the past 5 days with the archived version. During this period, registration will be disabled.

All new registrations in the past 5 days will have their accounts reverted to a default status.

Fishing Scores
Fishing Scores will be unaffected by this rollback. While the fish caught, exchanged, and bair used will be reset, the acquired score from playing the fishing game will remain unchanged. During the rollback period however, the fishing game will be disabled since it is dependant on inventories for bait and fish.

Rare Items (OMG Events)
Unfortunately, due to the abnormally high granting rate of rare items on the site during this 5-day period, we have no choice in re-granting rare events won within the past few days. We are sorry for any inconveience this may cause.

Due to the nature of the guild system (purchasing a guild, donations, join fees), the Gaia Guild Network will be disabled during the first part of the rollback period. When GGN does come online, all gold related functionality will fail. Should guild owners wish to have members join their guild, but there is a join fee, it is reccomended the guild leader remove this requirement during the period where all economy-related functions are disabled.

We would like to thank all users for their cooperation during this period. We hope to have this resolved as soon as possible.

14 Rollbak almost completeEdit

  • Topic Rollbak almost complete - Posted: lanzer Sat May 14, 2005 10:41 am

Sorry for the long delay, the rollback did take longer to perform than expected, but in a few moment the rollback will be complete, and most features on Gaia will be restored.

  • - Currently all accounts have been rolled back to the day of May 9th, 2005 at 3:00am, PST
  • - All items in the marketplace and all items that is being traded are returned to their original accounts
  • - New users who signed on after May 9th are still here, there's no need to sign in again
  • - To help compensate for the gold loss, all accounts who were active during the rollback period will have a gold increase.
  • - Regular users have 1700 gold added to their account
  • - New users have 500 to 1700 gold added depending on when they signed in.

For all users who donated during that time period, your items will be returned to you later on in the afternoon.

We're very sorry that everyone had to go through this rollback. We'll do what we can to prevent anything similar from happening in the future, and we'll continue to work hard in bringing everyone new updates and features in the days to come.

Forum Code Migration Notice

If you run a thread on Gaia, you may have attempted to edit a post, and been greeted with an error such as:

Migration Notice This post is in read only mode during migration to the new forum code.

This is because we are in the process of migrating our post database to the new posting format. The end result of this will be a distrobution of Gaia's posts across several servers, eliminating the need for "archived" and "message offline" posts.

Posts that are flagged with the Migration Notice have already been copied to the new format. Unfortunately, this also means these posts must be blocked from editing.

Owners of threads in Self-Mod forums (CB, Guilds, etc) may still perform delete post if required. However, as more posts are converted to the new format, it is more likely that the more recent posts on the site will become editing-locked.

Thank you everyone for your patience as we move forward with this code migration. We are hoping to have this process completed as soon as possible.

GAIA Casino and Slot Machine is released!

The admins, artists, and developers of Gaia invite you to join in on the Casino fun!

To get started, here's a few things you should know:

  • You need tokens to play the slot machine! Visit Gold Mountain on Gambino Island and purchase tokens from the Tokens Booth. Tokens are 1 gold each.
  • As you play the slot machine, your tokens will get turned into credits. You can reuse credits in the slot machine, and when you're done you can "cash out" your credits for tickets. Once you have some tickets saved up, you can buy cool new stuff in Prize&Joy, which is located at Gold Mountain.
  • To win on two-of-a-kind, they must be next to each other. For example: wing:wing:coin is a win, but halo:coin:halo is not.
  • Slot Machine is multiplayer! It works very similar to fishing in that you can chat with your friends. Also, you get to see the results of their slot machines so you can make fun of them when they lose .
  • There a couple of bugs to look out for. The first time you open the slot machine, you might get an error. Simply close and reopen the game and it will not show up again.

I'm sure there are many questions about why we chose the concepts we are using. I have discussed these decisions in My journal.

To get started visit Gold Mountain at Isle De Gambino.

  • Topic GAIA Casino is released! - Posted: DARKNRGY Tue Jun 21, 2005 3:15 am

I made a change to the Slot Machine which you might notice some funny behavior as a result.

We were having an issue where one of our servers, noodle, was getting hammered to hard from Slot Machine. The reason is that every time you pull the slot, it would tell noodle to remove a token from your inventory. This ended up being too much for noodle since it already handles all other inventory stuff.

So, the solution is to store small amounts of tokens on a different server temporarily, and then update that server instead (the server name is braaains =]).

Tokens are moved 20 at a time from noodle to braaains. Then, inside the game, you use tokens from braaains. Once your token on braaains has run out, it pulls more from noodle.

This whole thing should be transparent, unless you close the Slot Machine window without hitting "Cashout and Quit". If you do this, it might appear as if you had lost tokens. Don't worry - those tokens are most likely just tied up on braaains. Simply open the game and click "Cashout and Quit".

And just in general, its a good idea to hit Cashout and Quit every time you leave the game.

Ok, just wanted to share that to avoid any confusion it may cause. Enjoy =].

Gaia Online Forums
New Forum Code Release

Well, if you are here, and you are reading this, then congratulations, you made it with us! What you are looking at hopefully looks exactly like the previous forums, however, we've changed just about everything. Probably the most significant of these is the lack of "archived" or "offline" posts. Additionally, post editing will be reenabled once we know the code is going to be okay. Additionally, there are two known issues we are currently resolving.

1) Threads older than 21 days might be slow to load. This is because they may still need to be paginated. This will add about 2-3 seconds to the thread's loading time for the first load only. From then on, the loading process should be lightening fast.

2) Threads older than 21 days may not be able to have their posts called by ID. A call by id will look like: We are still in the process of indexing the 40 million+ posts, and should have that completed over the next few days.

The following posts contain some additional information that you may find useful concerning the migration.

  • Topic Introducing the New Forum Code - Posted: Jakobo Fri Jun 17, 2005 3:16 am

Why is ______ disabled still?
During the initial hours of the new forum code release, we have turned off most features of the site. Rewriting the forums means that several files have had small adjustments. To ensure everything is working, we are enabling features one at a time until the entire site is live again.

Where did my post go?
If you do not see an older post, it may be that it has not been fully migrated to the new system.

Why did my thread lose pages?
Under the original system, pagination was done in a way that did not work well with threads greater than 100 pages. Often times, going to the "last" page in a thread would return an empty page. This has been corrected, and the page numbers have been recalculated for every thread on the site. No pages were actually lost, but instead, the counter was set appropriately.

Why are my Subscriptions Failing?
Subscriptions may be failing due to any number of things (see FAQ 1). Since they were turned on with the forums, it may take us a bit to straighten them out so that they are working fully.

Why are there only 14 posts on a page?
Under the new pagination system, deleted posts will not cause posts to move "forward" a slot. The result of this can be less than 15 posts on a page. This is expected behaviour.

12 Missing PayPal Sealed EnvelopesEdit

  • Topic Missing PayPal Sealed Envelopes - Posted: Ling Tue Jul 12, 2005 3:49 pm

We are aware of a bug in which PayPal donators from July 8th to the 11th received 1 Sealed Envelope per donation regardless of the amount they donated.

The bug itself has been corrected, so all donations received henceforth should process normally.

We are working to correct the issue for those affected between July 8th-11th, and you should receive your missing Sealed Envelopes within a couple of days. You do not need to send in a feedback form regarding it, unless you do not receive those missing letters within a week.

Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and thank you for your patience and continued support.

16 Introducing the Optional Word Filter FeatureEdit

  • Topic Introducing the Optional Word Filter Feature - Posted: Jakobo Sat Jul 16, 2005 2:02 am

Optional Gaia Word Filter Feature

Gaia Online is happy to introduce a feature on our forums for those who prefer not to see the excessive swearing and profanity on the site. Accessible through the Account Page, enabling this word filter will slightly alter basic profanities. Gaia Online remains committed to free and open speech by it's members, and has made available filtering tools for those who wish to use it.

It is important to note that the Word Filter is off by default for registered accounts, and must be enabled. It only changes what is viewed, not what is inserted into the database. Only those who opt to filter their swearing will see the censored version of the words.

We hope that those who wish to avoid the majority of swearing or profanity on Gaia Online will take the time to enable their filters, while those who do not wish to enable the filters will continue to use Gaia as they always have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Is word filtering on automatically?
Word filtering is off by default, as it is not our intention to censor Gaia. We simply wish to provide a basic option for those who want to avoid seeing swearing on the forums.

Q What happens to filtered words?
Words on the Gaia Filter list will have their words' center replaced with asterisks. While this does not totally obfuscate the word, it provides a level of mangling adequate for most people.

Q So, what gets filtered?
Filtered words are the basic swear words, and words that are likely to be found offensive to others (on the strong setting). The filter list is kept small for the purposes of load time. Users who choose to leave the filter off will continue to see the site as they always have with no change.

19 Introducing the Inventory Organizer (Formally)Edit

  • Topic Introducing the Inventory Organizer (Formally) - Posted: kaia9 Thu May 19, 2005 11:36 pm

Now you can organize your inventory like you would files on your computer desktop. Use it to:

  • Organize your inventory items however you like!
  • Place items or friends into your suitcase for use in your house.

( Please note that under the new system, items in your suitcase will no longer appear on your 'My Inventory' page. Once you save for the first time, all items in your suitcase will be 'moved' to your suitcase. ) Place items into storage. This is especially useful for users with a lot of items. To launch the Arranger, go to: Profile > My Inventory and click "ORGANIZE MY INVENTORY" ...or... Profile > My Home

Using the Organizer

  • Make sure you click SAVE CHANGES after making any changes! (We put this first because it's so important.)
  • Click on Suitcase or Storage to open on of those windows.
  • Click and drag an item to move it -- either to a new spot in the same window, or to another window.
  • To select multiple items, hold SHIFT when you click OR
  • Put the cursor in between items (so that none is highlighted) and click and drag the mouse over a group of items
  • To deselect and item, hold SHIFT and click.
  • Items in Storage and Suitcase are unavailable outside of the arranger. To have an item from the Suitcase or Storage available to equip, sell, trade or vend, you must first move the item out of Suitcase / Storage into your Inventory, and save the changes.

  • Topic Introducing the Inventory Organizer (Formally) - Posted: kaia9 Thu Jul 28, 2005 9:47 pm

there was a small bug with the inventory arranger that caused it to stop saving over the past few days. the bug has been resolved, and the new version is active.

there is a small remaining bug where if a user has saved in the past with more than 100 items in their suitcase, they will not be able to save, getting the "your inventory has changed since you loaded" error message. the message is wrong, but the problem is still there. there is a 100 item limit on users' suitcase to help the load time in housing, which will stay. we will be releasing a new version in the next few days that reports the error correctly.

we are sorry for any inconvenience that this has caused.

  • Topic Introducing the Inventory Organizer (Formally) - Posted: pizmonaut Fri Jul 29, 2005 5:33 pm

The 100 items bug is now fixed in version Alpha 0.38. Let me know if you are still seeing any issues with it.

29 New Feature: Gaia User AdsEdit

  • Topic New Feature: Gaia User Ads - Posted: CirqueDelFeu Fri Jul 29, 2005 7:46 pm

We're happy to announce the release of Gaia User Ads!

Questing for something and want to let everyone know? Looking to start a guild and don't know how to spread the word? Well now you can, with Gaia User Ads! At US$5 per 10,000 impressions, you can let everyone know what you're up to! If you act now, you can take advantage of our introductory special of 20,000 impressions per US$5! Visit the Gaia Store to get started: Important: Please edit your ad carefully before submitting it. Once an advertisement is submitted, it cannot be changed. Also note that ad linking is limited to resources within Gaia Online only; no off-site links are allowed at this time.

How do Gaia Ads work?

You purchase what are called "impressions" -- appearances of your ad on a page a viewer is loading -- in blocks of 10,000. Every time your ad comes up in the rotation and appears on a page a user is loading, one of your impressions is used up. So, if you wished to place an ad that would be viewed 50,000 times, you would add 5 blocks of 10,000 impressions to your Shopping Cart (for a total of $25.00).

What must I provide to place an ad?

You must provide the following information to place an ad:

  • Caption - A brief description of your ad, no more than 25 characters long.
  • Ad Text - The text of your advertisement, no more than 225 characters long. Your ad must meet the Gaia Online posting guidelines (be PG-13).
  • Link URL - A hyperlink for your ad that will allow a viewer to jump to what you are advertising about. For example, if you wanted to create a hyperlink to a thread you have just created, you would use a hyperlink that looks similar to the following (leaving out the "http://" part - we provide that for you):

except that you would set the value of "t" to be whatever the ID of your thread happens to be. A link for a guild would look like this:

except that you would set the guild_id to be whatever the ID of your guild is. Helpful hint -- just copy the link from your browser window when you're on the opening page of a guild or first page of a discussion thread and take off the "http://" part...

What happens after I submit my ad?

After an advertisement is purchased and submitted, it will be reviewed by a staff member. If your advertisement meets our Terms of Service and is acceptable to our viewing audience, it will be entered into the delivery system and released for viewing.

Can I change my ad after it is submitted or while it is running?

Once an advertisement is submitted by you, it cannot be changed any further! We ask that you please edit your ad carefully and be certain it meets our posting guidelines before submitting it. Staff members will NOT edit your ads for you or make any changes to them; ads not meeting the Gaia Online posting requirements will be dropped.

13 New signature rules on GaiaEdit

  • Topic New signature rules on Gaia - Posted: lanzer Sat Aug 13, 2005 2:51 am

Hello everyone:

I'm sure that everyone who post regularly have their own custom signatures. It's a great way to express yourself and share with others our opinions, likes, or personalities.

Sometimes new users are not aware of the signature rules such as the size restrictions and cause loading errors, or there might be sigs with material that are not appropriate. When that happens, a user's signature is disabled.

When a signature is disabled by a moderator, you can now visit the edit profile page and re-enable your signature for a cost. The cost for re-enabling a blocked signature will go up. This penalty is enforced to avoid abuse. The costs to re-enable signatures are as follows:

  • 1st time - 10 gold
  • 2nd time - 100 gold
  • 3rd time - 1,000 gold
  • 4th time - 10,000
  • 5th time and above - 20,000g, 40,000g, 80,000g, etc...

For more information, please read our rules and guidelines at

01 Guild System is going down for maintenance [updated]Edit

  • Topic Guild System is going down for maintenance [updated] - Posted: DARKNRGY Thu Sep 01, 2005 4:42 pm

The guild system has been rewritten to accomodate new feature development and compatibility with our current framework.

The guild system will be down primarily for data migration, which will be very similiar to the forum migration we had not too long ago.

When guilds comes back it will look mostly the same, but will work very differently on the back end. Once the rewrite is stable, I'll be working on new features and integrating guilds in to some of our other projects.

Edit: Guilds 2.0 is up and running.

03 Gaia Towns Alpha Testing had begunEdit

  • Topic Gaia Towns Alpha Testing had begun - Posted: lanzer Sat Sep 03, 2005 8:44 am

After months of development and hard work, Gaia Towns is finally ready for initial testing.

Currently the Gaia Towns chat servers cannot handle high load, (If all Gaians log into the chat server right now the system will instantly crash. ) but we still need to test a lot of basic functionalities with a sizeable amount of users. Therefore a group of users had been selected to preview and test this alpha release.

Aside from the chat server, all avatars need to be saved under a new system in order to work with Gaia Towns, that system will not be ready until next week.

Everyone is working overtime in bringing Gaia Towns live. We hope that all can enjoy this great feature as soon as possible. Please stay tuned for more info to come.

Today we made a lot of changes to the system in preparation for some new features, but along with the changes came a few bugs, including a gold glitch that earned some users more gold as usual.

All those bugs had been fixed, and there will be no roll-back.

The initial release of Gaia Towns was very buggy and will take some time to have everything fixed. But we're hard at work and we'll have the general release ready as soon as possible.

There will be a 15 minute downtime at 5:30pm, PST today (Sept 6) for some more testing. Thank you for your patience.

Gaia Town pre-release is now up in Barton Town!

  • Topic Gaia Town Pre-release - Posted: VO Fri Sep 16, 2005 6:08 pm

Dear Users,

We've just added the bug catching feature in Towns. To get started, simply go to Old Man Logan's store in the Bass'ken Lake map and purchase a bug catching net.

Go to Towns and you should be able to select your net on the Actions Button on the bottom right hand corner of the screen and begin catching bugs that are flying around.

Once you've filled up your net, you'll need to deposit your bugs with Bogie, the bug collection bot who is located in each of the town fountain maps. This will put the bugs into your inventory.

As of now, you won't be able to trade your bugs in for stuff, but you will be able to in the future. Please be patient as we get these features out to you.

Have fun!

16 Gaia Guild Network 2.0 BETA releasedEdit

  • Topic Gaia Guild Network 2.0 BETA releasedDARKNRGY Fri Sep 16, 2005 11:23 pm

Gaia Guild Network is up and running.

The URL for guilds has changed. It is now You can also navigate to guilds via Barton Town.

As stated before, GGN 2.0 is a rewrite of GGN 1.0. Most of the functionality remains the same, but the way it works on the back end is completely different.

Jakobo's new forum code and post types has been fully integrated into GGN 2.0.

Crew members will notice some interface changes under the moderation panel.

There is a Vice Captain user level now. Vice Captain have the same permission level as Captain. The reason for this user level is so the guild does not have to depend on one user to stay in existence. If that user leaves gaia or gets banned or gets grounded for life, the vice captain can take over.

We have many new features lined up for GGN, but the focus right now is to make the core of GGN stable and reliable. Next week I'll be adding a full crew logging system (deleting threads, posts, changing ownership, etc), finishing up the Quit Guild action, adding the donate link, and a bunch of other little things.

For the future we have planned some really neat features like SUBFORUM SUPPORT and GUILD HOUSES and much more! Making guilds fun and cool is my life for the next couple of months!

We had much difficulty in integrating all the new features being released and I appologize for how long you guys had to wait.

For bug reporting, I've created a thread in the Bug Reports & Technical Support forum. Please try to only report critical bugs (such as gold glitches or permissions problems) until GGN is stable. Please keep in mind this is a PUBLIC BETA release and we anticipate and know about several bugs.

16 Post Types ReleasedEdit

  • Topic Post Types Released - Posted: Jakobo Fri Sep 16, 2005 11:25 pm

Hey, everyone!

I just wanted to put up an announcement about the new Post Types that are going to crop up all over the place. It's a whole new way to express yourselves in the Gaia Online Forums! Here's a small sample of what's available:

  • Dice Rolls
  • Document Style Posts
  • Post Some of Your Inventory
  • Post Friends
  • Shout!
  • Think
  • And more!

These are all accessible from the normal "Post Reply" screen, just like when replying to a topic normally.

Also, the Topic View / Thread View got a minor facelift courtesy of VO. The profile bar has been moved up a little, and the common buttons (quote/edit) are revitalized! Even the default speaking bubble got an upgrade!

Q I can't see the post type screen... A Usually, this is caused by not having Javascript enabled. Like many of the features on Gaia, we ask everyone to enable Javascript for functionality. If you don't (or can't) enable Javascript, you will still be able to post regularly and see all the posts on the site.

Q I am getting an error with...
A Please post your error in the Q&A Forum. There is a sticky dedicated to error reporting for this feature:

Q How can I disable my post types / they are crashing my browser!
A Turning off stylehseets can prevent the heavy avatar load, as can reducing your browser cache. The image load of the new system is comprable to the "event" forums, which have 40+ avatars in the page header, and shouldn't be an issue on most computers.

11 Pre-Release: Enhanced User Profiles!Edit

  • Topic Pre-Release: Enhanced User Profiles! - Posted: twobit Tue Oct 11, 2005 12:02 am

Welcome to the new world of Gaia Profiles!

The new profile system is here! We've got alot of new features that will kick your socks off, but keep in mind this is your first look at a new feature, and we're still trying to work out the kinks.

  • Social Networking

With the new profile system it's really easy to browse through people's friends list, see who they are friends with, and learn all about other users (you can hide your friends list if you so choose).

  • About Me.

We've added a little About Me section where you can tell other users a bit about yourself. BB-Code enabled, of course!

  • Currently Equipped Items

Ever wish you could find out what someone was wearing? Now you can! Every profile now lists only what the user has equipped on their avatar. Click on an item that you're not sure about, and you're greeted with a full description of that item, with the ability to add it to your own wishlist. Non-Equipped items are still hidden...

  • Quick access to Guilds, Recent posts, and User's store

Quick access shortcuts to see where other users have posted recently, what guilds they are a member of, and to see what each user is selling in their own store.

  • Wishlist

The wish list is your place to highlight items you are interested in. You can also get in depth information on all items in Gaia now. Give it a shot, click on an item that somebody has equipped and try adding it to your Wish List. You can specify if the item status is Wanted, Questing, Donated, or Bought and whether you want other people to see the item in your Wish List.

  • Comments

Love them, like them or hate them? Now you can leave a comment for any user and let them know what you think.

  • Multimedia (flash only)

Like to play with flash? Have a short clip that you want to show to others? Post the url for it in the multimedia section. Multimedia falls under the same copyright guidelines as signatures. Multimedia can however be more thank 100kb in size.

Here's a temporary link to the new profile page so you can play around with it (it's also linked in Memberslist):

  • Topic Concerning naked avatars and old or buggy avatars - Posted: lanzer Fri Oct 14, 2005 4:21 pm

Hello everyone:

During our recent avatar upgrades, a lot of buggy avatars were created. Some had missing limbs or items, while some avatars appeared naked. Those avatars were never meant to be made the way they are, and we ask all users to please re-save your avatars if your avatar is buggy.

Otherwise, our system will go through systematically to re-save avatars that are glitched or not compliant with the new format. The re-saving process will take time but it'll cover all avatars on the site.

Thank you for your attention.

In the interests of fairness for all users, all of the previous Town data for house placement has been wiped and we are starting fresh. Don't worry about your bug or trash catches, those are still ok.

There have been a couple of minor changes to the moving in process, so please read the following steps in order to get started again:

1) Go to the Aekea Housing Commission and make sure you've chosen a house style.

2) While you are there, get a Barton Town Permit. This will allow you to place your home in GAIA Towns.

3) Launch GAIA Towns from the Trainstation in Barton Town and go look for a place to set up your home! (For optimal performance, we recommend you upgrade Flash to the latest version)

For more detailed information on GAIA Towns and setting up your home, view the GAIA Towns Instructions.

As we expect a large influx of users when GAIA Towns reopens, we have implemented a "reservation" system so that you can guarantee a spot with you and your friends.

Reserve is for all of you out there who want to live in the same neighborhood with your friends, but don't care exactly where. A Reservation is limited to one per user, and lasts 24 hours. This time period can be extended once, for the same fee. During the Reservation period, users who are on your friendslist who have not yet placed their house in Towns will see a Reserved sign for any open plots in the neighborhood that was reserved. Other users will not see anything, and will not be allowed to move into your reserved neighborhood. Once the Reservation period expires, the plots will then open up to any user who wants them, so make sure you coordinate with your friends before you get the Reservation so that they can all pick their plots before it expires. Reserve is limited to you, and any users on your friendslist. Because there are only 6 plots per neighborhood, you can reserve space for up to 5 people from your friendslist.

Relocate is for any user who wants to move their home after it has already been placed in Towns. This can be re-used, but it'll cost you. Just click on the Relocate button in the housing commission, and your home will be removed from Towns. Any users who are on the map where your house was at the time of Relocation will see your house there until they leave and come back to that map. Once you have completed the Relocation you are free to place your home elsewhere in Towns.

House plots are first come, first serve. To avoid frustration, please plan ahead with your friends to get a spot together. The reservation system will become active when GAIA Towns launches tomorrow.

Thanks again for your patience and enjoy!

Flowers and Trash... OH MY!

Earlier today, trash cleanup was re-enabled, and a big thank you goes out to all Gaia users who are helping to keep Gaia Towns clean.

Starting tonight, you'll finally be able to pick up flowers in Gaia Towns. Head over to Rina's Flowershoppe in Barton, and pick yourself up a Garden Shovel to be able to pick flowers.

Flowers work like trash where it's a first-gets-to-it basis, but, unlike trash, and more like Insects, you have to have the garden shovel item in your inventory, and you have to select the garden shovel icon (opposite of the net) to be able to dig up those flowers.

Have Fun!

28 Pre-Halloween Party in Gambino's MansionEdit

  • Topic Pre-Halloween Party in Gambino's Mansion - Posted: [NPC] Bucho Fri Oct 28, 2005 6:58 pm

Dear Guests,

I am Bucho, head of security for the Gambino family. Master Gino has asked that I arrange this year's Halloween celebration in memory of his father, the late Johnny K. Gambino. Master Gino has prior plans this evening, but has allowed the public to use his home for the party.

I will be opening the doors to the mansion very shortly and invite you on behalf of the late Johnny K. Gambino to make this the... ahem... "greatest party of all time."

Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Topic GRUNNY INVASION - Posted: [NPC] Bucho Fri Oct 28, 2005 9:46 pm

Due to a minor disturbance in the laboratory, quite a few grunnies have escaped into the mansion. We have received several reports saying that various guests were being "inconvenienced" by large groups of grunnies.

Here is some information that security has compiled for anyone considering entering the mansion!

Basic Rules-

- The more you participate in the mansion forum, the more chances you have of getting Grunnies.

- If you post after someone who has more Grunnies than you, you get another Grunny.

- The more Grunnies you get, the more things will happen... please refer to the Gambino Security Advisory System Chart located on the event stats page for more details.

Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Topic Grunny event will end at 6PM Pacific, 9PM Eastern - Posted: lanzer Sun Oct 30, 2005 6:37 pm

Hello everyone,

Happy Halloween, and hope everyone is able to participate in the Grunny event and get their items. We are gearing up for the Trick or Treat event right now, but we noticed that with the traffic caused by the Grunny invasion event, we will not be able to host both events at the same time...

Therefore, we will be ending the Grunny invasion event at 6PM pacific standard time (9PM Eastern).

We've worked hard on all the events and we hate to close it down early, but in order to have a smoother Trick or Treating event so everyone can have more fun in one event than to be stuck with two crippled ones.

We'll keep you all posted about any changes and updates.

31 Trick or Treating InfoEdit

  • Topic Trick or Treating Info - Posted: VO Mon Oct 31, 2005 1:07 am

Dear Users,

We will be getting Trick or Treating on the site shortly. So, to avoid any confusion, here are the basics on how it works:

1) Visit any NPC(such as Ian in Barton Boutique, Moira in Durem Depot, etc), and you will receive one candy. Visit another NPC and so on until you receive 10 candies.

2) Once you get 10 candies(color does not matter), look for Jack on one of the maps. Talk to him in order to get your prize.

Halloween Items are given out in order and there are 9 items to collect.

As for Trick or Treating in Towns, currently we are experiencing unforeseen technical problems with Towns and will try to get it up tomorrow. Trick or Treating in Towns is merely an alternate way to get the same items, but is a little more interactive because you get to control your avatar while gathering your candy.

So, the end result is the same.

We are very sorry for the inconveniences, please be patient with us as we are working as hard as we can to keep the site up. Have fun and Happy Halloween!

  • Topic Trick or Treating Info - Posted: VO Mon Oct 31, 2005 3:51 am

Dear Users,

We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with our graphics servers. As such, certain features, such as town maps, Gaia Towns, and to an extent, the Trick or Treating event, are not functioning correctly.

Because of this, we will extend the event for two more days until Thursday. We will announce the exact time of the end of the event at a later date, but for now, please rest assured that you will have plenty of time to get the event items over the course of the week.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience and encourage you to get some rest at this time.

Take care and best wishes,

the Admins

  • Topic Trick or Treating Info - Posted: kaia9 Mon Oct 31, 2005 2:13 pm

Trick or Treating on the maps should be working now, with jack showing up as he is supposed to. He's going to move around a bit, so keep an eye out!

Trick or Treating in Towns is also live, with a slight difference from the map. In Towns, you can go to every user's house, and there will be pumpkin outside the house. Click on the pumpkin to recieve the candy, if the house has any. Also, in Towns, since it's super easy to collect candy, you have to collect a total of 100 candies before speaking to Jack, who will be walking around the center fountain map in every Town. One thing to note: the candy that you get from the NPC's in the stores, and the candy you collect in Towns are not related.

Due to the problems getting these events going, we've extended the Trick or Treating on the map and in Towns until Thursday, November 3rd at 6pm. (Edit: aparently, Vo knows more about the end time than do... whoops!)

Edit: Jack forgot how to count for a few minutes, but i reminded him...

Edit: GOSH! Jack and his counting problems... giving users the same item over and over! I slapped Jack around a bit quite a while ago, and he's behaving... in order... sorry about that.

Enjoy! and sorry for the hiccups getting things going.

  • Topic ZOMBIE INFO *please read if you're a zombie* - Posted: VO Mon Oct 31, 2005 4:46 pm

Hey guys,

Thanks for participating in the Grunny Invasion this year. Some important info as it concerns you about your zombie status.

Sometime tomorrow, every account that has reached stage 3 or higher will receive a green vial in their inventory.

The Green Vial will change you back to your normal avatar.

Once this is done, you cannot change back to a zombie, so only use it if you want to change back.

Do not sell or give your vial to anyone. Your vial is the only free cure you'll get.

Happy Halloween!

Dear Gaia Users:

As you requested, we are no longer selling Gaia User Ads in blocks of 10,000 impressions at the Gaia Store. Instead, ads will be placed into rotation with the other active ads, and will remain visible for as many days of exposure as you have purchased. (In other words, if you wished to place an ad that will be seen for five days, you would add 5 days of ad views to your Shopping Cart in the Gaia Store (for a total of $25.00)).

Please note: Any ads that had not expired from the system before the conversion have been placed in rotation in the new system.

We hope you find the new system more useful!

To make space for users who are still looking for a place to put their home we added 3 new town maps on the world map. This adds 300 new suburbs (which hold 6 houses each), so there should be ample space for anyone who's on the hunt for a plot. As these fill up we will add more maps, so please don't worry if you are afraid you may not get a spot ^_^

23 Official Release of ProfilesEdit

  • Topic Official Release of Profiles - Posted: twobit Wed Nov 23, 2005 11:33 pm

Official Release of Profiles

Today is the official release of the new profiles! Since the last announcement of profiles there have been many major improvements and features released. Here's a list of some of the things that have made the profiles such a success.

Theme Customization
Profiles are now highly customizable. You can choose one of several stock themes or go at it and make your own! Personalized profiles are highly popular and you will find many guides and users willing to help you out in both Profile Discussion and Extended Feedback.

Friends in Common
When browsing profiles you may see some avatar headshots in the details section. These are the friends you have in common with the user's profile you are viewing. Basically, you can see how you and another user are connected to each other.

Edit Profile
Along with the new profiles comes the new Edit Profile. Instead of one large page of settings as it was, the settings have now been moved into their relevant categories.

The most rewarding thing about working on Profiles has been watching custom theming really take off and while the main development cycle has come to an end, you can expect many more improvements along the way. Thank you all for helping us test the profiles over the last month.

28 Monthly Collectible purchase by Phone Now PossibleEdit

  • Topic Monthly Collectible purchase by Phone Now Possible - Posted: lanzer Mon Nov 28, 2005 4:57 am

Hello everyone,

Due to user requests, we are now happy to offer our users the ability to purchase by phone!

In the past many users had asked for ways to purchase Monthly Collectibles without having to sign up for Paypal. Since then we had been looking for a safe and reputable system, and starting this week, we'll be working with Surfpin for that solution.

What is Surfpin?

Surfpin is a company that handles "PayByPhone" payment services. A Gaia user would register with us for making a purchase, dial surfpin's 900 number to receive a code from the phone call, then enter the code in the pay by phone page to complete the process.

When a user makes a purchase for Gaia using Surfpin, a $2.99 charge will be placed on your next month's phone bill under the name "Surfpin".

If you are under 18, you must notify your parent before using this service. This is very important. The phone system is here to provide an alternative means of making Monthly Collectible purchases, but if it is abused, then we will have to take it away. Users under the age of 12 cannot make purchases by phone, sorry.

Click here to make a purchase by phone.

Note on Gaia Donation

Gaia is a free website that relies on user purchases to support its hardware, bandwidth, and development costs. The phone system charges $2.99 (Paypal donation grants a donation item every $2.50) because of the extra setup fee. Also, every phone line can only accept one phone donation during our trial period to avoid abuse. In the future, the limit might be changed.

Thanks for your support and for helping to keep Gaia the largest growing community on the web!

'*More information about 900 numbers can be found here.

02 Gaia Exchange is here!Edit

  • Topic Gaia Exchange is here! - Posted: kaia9 Fri Dec 02, 2005 11:26 pm

for all those who have been having fun in towns collecting bugs, flowers and trash, here's what it's all used for. AND... for those fishers out there who want something to do with all those guppies... you can now trade-up fish!

the exchange is accessed directly from the stores. currently, logan is handling all the fish (like he always has), moira is dealing with all the bugs (which get converted into inks), peyo is making you all kinds of fun paper hats with the trash from towns, and rina is making you pretty flower bouquets.

the exchange has been changed a bit from how it worked in the fishing store. there's a bit more confirmation, but most of all, more options. for simple exchanges (like fish hats) you just click on the hat you want, then click exchange, then confirm. for other things like ink, you click the kind of ink you want, and then you are given the options that pertain to the type of ink you are getting.

for example: Red Ink

there are many different ways to get red ink. there are Red Flys, Red Butterflys, Red Beetles, and Red Dragonflys. if you have 50 of any of those, then you can do a 'direct' exchange to one red ink. OR... you can exchange 10 Red Flys, 20 Red Butterflys, 10 Red Beetles, and 10 Red Dragonflys to get the 50 needed for one ink. isn't that cool?

the flower exchange is a slightly different process than the bugs / trash / fish with the ability to use those inks that you've been making for a unique bouquet for yourself or a friend! there's a step by step process to help you decide and make the best bouquet possible.

13 Planned Downtime (Wed Dec 14th @ 5PM Pacific Time)Edit

  • Topic Planned Downtime (Wed Dec 14th @ 5PM Pacific Time) - Posted: Jakobo Tue Dec , 2005 6:04 am

Planned Site Downtime

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

Hello everyone. It's been really busy for Gaia, and we're really thankful for how supportive everyone has been over the last few months. As Gaia continues to grow as a site, we have reached a point where we need to make some large changes to our servers. Because of this, we will be preparing for a Planned Site Downtime starting 5PM Pacific Time (8PM Eastern Time) on December 14th, 2005.

Below you will find some topics about the Planned Downtime which may answer any questions:

What is Planned Downtime?
Planned Downtime means that the Admins know Gaia will be offline for a period of time, and want to let everyone know in advance. In our case, we know that the readjustments to the Gaia servers will require us to take some things offline which would make the site slow (or simply not there) for many people. Instead, we opted to turn the site off for a few hours, and then bring Gaia back up at full speed.

12 Hours Seems long...
The site won't vanish right at 5pm (PST). Slowly, as changes are being made, features will be taken offline one at a time. Finally, the front page will be replaced with a information page, detailing the status for the site. This way, everyone will be able to stay informed about how things are going. Finally, when everything is back up, the site will pop online. It shouldn't be the full 12 hours, however, it's better to set aside some extra time, just in case.

Donations to the Site
Donations to the site are being caught by a secondary server (external to the downtime), which will continue to function during the entire process. After the migration, we'll continue to use this server as a fail-safe for PayPal in order to ensure sealed envelopes are delivered.

Vend System (time sensitive things on the site)
The Marketplace will be frozen during the Planned Downtime so as not to detract from auction durations and to give the store owners the amount of time they requested for their sales. Avatar Arena's weekly competition end at its regular time; the downtime is not expected to have an impact on the scoring.

The Merchandise Store (Shirts, Posters, Grunnys, Kikis)
No orders will be lost during the transition, however, during the Planned Downtime, no additional orders will be able to be placed. Once the site is live again, the Merchandise Store can be used normally again.

You said something about the front page-
Once the last feature is offline, the Gaia Home Page will become a status page to keep everyone informed about the process. This is a good place to come back to as well; once everything is ready to go again, that page will be replaced with the Gaia Home Page and all features will be turned on again.

Thank you everyone for your understanding as we work to improve Gaia further.

13 Regarding Donation problemsEdit

  • Topic Regarding Donation problems - Posted: lanzer Tue Dec 13, 2005 2:29 am

Hello everyone,

Last week we had installed a system to help resolve donation problems. The new system will help resolve donation problems within minutes. However, there seem to be a problem where some donation problems were not handled properly and did not grant items when it's supposed to.

I'm workon on fixing the problem right now and run through everyone's donation problems once again. Please give a few more days for everything to be fixed. We are striving to resolve every single donation problem.

Meanwhile, a lot of changes had been made to the overall system, and there should be no more donation problems even when the site is down.

Apologies for the delay. -Lanzer

  • Topic Regarding Donation problems - Posted: lanzer Tue Dec 20, 2005 4:28 am

An update for everyone:

The donation problems concerning people receiving only one donation item had all been resolved. It was caused by the system having trouble sending private message notifications since the PM system is down.

And the bugs related to the donation resolution system had also been fixed. If you believe that you still have donation itmes not yet received, please send us your donation problem report again.

Thank you for your support!

20 New Site Layout AnnouncementEdit

  • Topic New Site Layout Announcement - Posted: Jakobo Tue Dec 20, 2005 6:03 pm

Gaia Online is pleased to announce our new site layout!

One of the biggest changes is the new navigation. Making use of Flash and Javascript (and works really well if you don't have either of those), the new navigation provides 1-click access to all of Gaia's features. If the bar seems too large, just click on "Info" and it will collapse, leaving you more room for forum threads, profiles, etc. The site's navigation has been reduced to a total of 3 tabs:

My Gaia: Personalization, shopping, your journal, profile, house, and mail.

Community: Forums, Guilds, Gaia Towns, the Marketplace, Areans, and Storyline.

Games: All of our gaming along with the world map.

We hope you enjoy the new site design!

  • Topic New Site Layout Announcement - Posted: VO Tue Dec 20, 2005 9:31 pm

Dear Users,

Just wanted to let you know that the new design is still a work in progress. Over the next few weeks or so, we will slowly be making optimizations, starting with going through each feature and tweaking the layouts to work with the new design schemes of the new layout.

Also, we will be adding an option to use an html version of the navigator(this does not mean the old layout, but an HTML version of the flash navigator). Technically, right now, if you do not have flash, it should be loading the html version. However, in the near future, we will be adding the functionality to disable it and re-enable it at will.

In the meantime, please bear with us and help us bring this new site design to completion with your bug reports and feedback.

A few other info tidbits, the new site design is actually faster to load than the original one in terms of file size(mostly because it uses a lot less graphics than the original headers did). What users are currently experiencing is the start up time for the flash header to start up. We are currently working to optimize that.

Missing links are to be expected. If you find that something you used to use is missing, please let us know and we will try to get it back in here. As our site has a large number of templates and files, it is more than likely that some things may have been overlooked.

Thanks for your support and enjoy snow in TOWNS in the meantime! Xmas is right around the corner!

Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays!

23 Xmas Event ScheduleEdit

  • Topic Xmas Event Schedule - Posted: VO Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:04 pm

Dear Users,

This year's Xmas event will begin on Sunday, December 25th, 2005. Exact time of the event start will be announced at a later time.

1) Xmas Caroling in Stores- Visit any NPC and look for the "Sing Carol" button in the NPC interaction area. Click on that to sing a carol to the NPC. Once you've built up enough Xmas cheer, look for Santa in the middle of Barton and he'll give you your gift.

2) Xmas Caroling in Towns- Organize a group of friends and go around singing carols to everyone's house to build up your Xmas cheer. Once you've got enough cheer, go visit Santa in in the town fountain map to claim your gifts.

There are 8 gifts total to collect and the event will run up until New Year's Eve, so you should have plenty of time to collect the full set.

Happy Holidays and hope to see you there!

Please access Township through the World Map in order to carol in Towns. The HTML and Flash header links are currently pointing to the wrong files.

We will fix this as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

  • Topic Xmas Event Schedule - Posted: VO Sun Dec 25, 2005 1:16 pm

UPDATE: Those who are still unable to access Towns via the header navigation should do a hard refresh of website(Most likely the navigator is using a cached version). This should fix the link for the correct version of Towns and you should be able to see Santa in Towns.

Please refrain from using the event for now until I am able to contact a developer to fix it. I was just made aware that the Towns version isn't granting items as well. It's probably better that you don't waste your time until you can be sure it will work. I will have the event extended to make up for the lost time. Many apologies for all of the confusion.

Trying to track down a developer to fix this right now(as most are with their families for Xmas). Please use Towns to carol in the meantime if possible. I will keep you updated as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience.

Rina's shop is now working, so please carol in the shops until we can get a fix for the Towns version. Thank you for your patience.

If you happen to have 100% cheer in Towns, DO NOT talk to Santa. Once the problem has been fixed, you should be able to talk to him and get your item instantly. In the meantime, avoid clicking on Santa until we announce that the problem has been fixed otherwise you risk losing your cheer percentage.

Hello everyone:

A few bug fixes had been made to the donation reporting system. For those who donated in November, your missing November items had been granted. Also, all reports where the automatic system failed to find the transaction ID had all been processed again.

Thank you for all those who reported about the problem. We will continue to make sure that the system is bug free.

Beginning at 6pm PST tonight, we will be opening the doors to the New Gambino Mansion in Durem.

To get there, click on the GAMES tab and then use the World Map to get to Durem.

The New Gambino Mansion is located on the bottom left corner of the Durem map.

At 6pm PST, you will also notice Cindy Donovinh on the map. Click on her icon to read the New Year's comic. There will be one page unlocked every half hour until 9pm PST(or New Year's on the East Coast).

During this time, we hope you will hang out with your friends here on our forums. As long as you are active, make posts every now and then, you will have a chance of running into Mrs Claus in the New Gambino Mansion forum. She will give you 1 of 4 different event items to collect every time you see her.

There is no need to spam, just casually hang out in our forums and it should take no longer than 1 hour to get all 4 items.

While the storyline ends at 9pm PST, the event period will last for 24 hours until 6PM Sunday, so you should have ample time to get all 4 items.

We hope you enjoy this year's event and have a safe and happy new year!
