Happy New Year everyone!!! Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and wishing you a fun and exciting year to come.

Starting this year Gaia Online's focus is to provide the fastest and smoothest service for everyone. It'll start with 4 more servers to be added in Janurary and more coding to rid of the critical errors.

At the same time, construction work had begun in Gambino and the casino will open when everything is complete.

Community features are also in the works. Recruited consultants had been at work in bringing us additional features that are also slated for later this month. They'll appear most likely after the server upgrades.

Meanwhile, a new item update is also coming. Stay tuned for there will be lots to come for the year 2004! icon_blaugh.gif

Due to a problem with the new web server, the donations that were made between January 6th until January 8th did not have the thank you letter sent to the donator's accounts. The problem had been fixed and all the thank you letters had been sent to the respective donators.

We apologize for the inconvenience, if anyone is still having trouble with missing letters please contact us through our feedback form at:

Thank you for everyone's contribution to Gaia Online. icon_3nodding.gif

Apologies for the outage. When the power went down it was bad news for all the servers as Linux servers really hate to be turned off without a proper shutdown.

The problem with the login screen when accessing the Gambino server is now fixed also. The Ian server will be back up later tonight.

Much more work needs to be done to have the new database server in place. Hopefully it can be placed on-line before tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

If you receive a notice about a go-gaia beta, do not sign up there. This is, in fact, a scam designed to trick users into giving out their UserID and Passwords.

When we do go to beta, it will be announced here in the announcements forum, or on our main page at

Please take all steps necessary to keep your UserIDs and Passwords safe.

The database had to go through an optimization this morning. The process started at 1:00am but unfortunately due to the large size of the database the process was not finished until 6:45pm in the afternoon.

As a next step to improve on performance, the many services within Gaia will have their own database servers so future maintenance will only affect one area of the site at one time and will not cause a downtime of more than a few hours.

Though such optimization should not be necessary until another 6 months later. Thank you for your patience, and we'll continue to work hard to improve on the speed and performance of Gaia Online.

07 Gaia Online Staffs Would Never Ask For PasswordsEdit

  • Topic Gaia Online Staffs Would Never Ask For Passwords - Posted: Arwen Wed Jul 07, 2004 12:39 am

This is a reminder to all users of Gaia Online that Administrators, Moderators, and Dedicated Moderators would never ask for your password. We do not send Private Messages or E-mail asking for account related questions such as your passwords.

The Gaia Online e-mail ends with the following:

Please remember at Gaia Online, we try our best to protect your account, but the best protection can only start with a strong password. Please consider the following when choosing your password:

- Never use a "simple password" like your birthday, your dog's name, etc.
- Use both number and letters in any combination
- The longer the password, the better
- Change your password often
- Avoid using your password at Gaia Online on any other webpage
- Do not share your password with anyone, that includes friends or families
- Do not share accounts

If you have recieved an e-mail or a private message from a user asking for your password, impersonating a Gaia Online Staff, giving you gold/rare item in exchange for your password. Please forward the message to a Moderator as soon as possible. And just ignore the PM or email from the person.

If you have any further questions please feel free to PM any ONLINE Moderators.

  • Topic Gaia Online Staffs Would Never Ask For Passwords - Posted: Arwen Wed Jul 07, 2004 12:47 am

Don't Loan Any Of Your Items

Also, don't lend/loan your items to users you barely know. For example: A user posts or PMs you asking if I can see those Angelic Minis for a second so I can take a screenshot or something along the line like; Can I borrow those for a moment!? I will give you my password so I wouldn't run away with them.

That will result in an item scam and you end up losing your item. So please don't loan items to users you just met in 2 days or 2 months. Once your item is loaned its gone. Gaia Online is not responsible for loss or stolen items. Please protect your items and gold!

Don't loan anything to anyone at all. If a user refuses to stop bothering you about the item or you just want to report it to a Moderator. You are free to do so annonymously ^_^

EDIT: For more information, check out Dri's thread XD

16 Database bugs and rollback of user accounts.Edit

  • Topic Database bugs and rollback of user accounts. - Posted: lanzer Fri Jul 16, 2004 6:51 pm

Gaia online had moved to a new database handling system on the 14th so we can scale up and meet the demands of our growing community. Unfortunately, even after testing, the new database system still had bugs which caused some severe damage to the many user's accounts.

Most of the major bugs had been fixed, however the only way to restore the thousands of damaged accounts is to perform a rollback.

As of this morning, everyone's account had been rolled back to their original state as of July 14th, 2:30pm.

We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience that this might have caused.

  • Topic Database bugs and rollback of user accounts. - Posted: lanzer Sat Jul 17, 2004 8:58 am

For those who had lost items or gold, please note the following:

Donation items - All donation items lost during the rollback period will be automatically recovered

Store items - Gold will be recovered to users who bought items from the stores during the rollback period through automatic scripting also. Due to the large number of transactions being made, we cannot gaurantee that everyone's gold will be fully recovered.

Items traded - Please contact the owner of the item and trade again if you have lost a traded item.

Thank you for your attention.

  • Topic Database bugs and rollback of user accounts. - Posted: lanzer Tue Jul 20, 2004 1:59 am

As of 10:30pm today, all user gold that were spent at the stores and salon had been recovered. All mail donation items had been restored also.

If you had received a donation item during the rollback period but have not yet received your item, please write to us again through the feedback form. We'll respond to your problem ASAP.

14 Gaia Friendslist is now active!Edit

  • Topic Gaia Friendslist is now active! - Posted: kaia9 Wed Jul 14, 2004 11:49 pm

the gaia friendslist is ready!.

the friendslist is a way to integrate a lot of the features current and upcoming throughout the site. through the friendslist you have two lists, one list of your "friends" and a list of "ignored". these lists will follow you through the site.

you can access your friendslist from your profile (the first nav button in the top banner). details about the navigation within the friendslist is as follows:

from when you first get there, you have the ability to add friends by username (or user ID, if you know that) from the form on the top right hand side of the page. just type in the username and click "Add to Friends". when you add someone to your friendslist, they will be notified with an avatar bubble the next time they refresh a page, which will take them directly to their "approvals" page. they then have the option of approving your request, or denying it.

the ignore list works the same way for adding users to it, by username or user ID, but with one major difference. adding someone to your ignorelist is automatic, without authorization required.

the approval list is basically what it sounds like. it's a list of people who have requested you on their friendslist, and you have the options to approve or deny them. if you approve them, you are added immediately to their list. after the approval, you will get a confirmation that everything happened correctly, and you will have a link to add the person(s) that you just approved to your friendslist. (if they are not already there). if you deny the request, the request is removed from the system. if someone repeadly asks to be on your friendslist, and you don't want to hear from them anymore, add them to your ignore list.

is your outgoing requests that have not been approved yet. from this list, you have the option of reminding people that you sent the request, or removing the request. you can only send one reminder every 24 hours. when you remind them, it sends them a PM telling them about the request. if you remove a request from your pending list, they will

no longer see the request.

you can search for any user, by just about any string. to perform a search for a specific user, type the username. if you are unsure of the username, you can use a wildcard (*) for searching. for example, to find all users with 'John' at the beginning of their username, you would search for 'john*'. the search is not case sensitive. from the results, you can pick who you were looking for, and add them to your friends list, or ignore list.

through your friendslist, you can quickly see which of your friends are online, link to their stores, PM them, and see their profiles, with more options to be added soon. the friendslist has it's own settings... in your user's profile, you can set the Always show my Email Address, Hide your online status, & Allow Private Messages setting have the option of only friends.

Allow Private Messages

is a new option in your profile. the way it works is that if you set it to "No" you will no longer receive any PM's from anyone (other than the Gaia staff & moderators). by default, it is set to "yes" for all current users. if you set it to "only friends" you will only get PMs from people on your friendslist.

forum tie-in
the friendslist also gets into the forums. any users that are on your friendslist will have their name highlighted in blue, and any people on your ignore list will have their name grayed out, and their avatar "ghosted".

mail tie-in

a new option will become active once you start your friendslist, but in the mail system. when starting a new message, you have the option of send to friendslist. clicking this button, will put "friends@gaia" in the username field. this will then send the message that you compose to *everyone* on your friendslist. you can also send to multiple users on your friendslist, by typing in their names, seperated by commas. this will only work for users who are *currently* on your friendslist, and will not work for users who are not.

profile tie-in
if you view any user's profile, there is a new field that has been added. if the user that you are looking at is currently on your friendslist, then it will say so, and if not, you will see the same Add to Friends and Add to Ignored buttons that are found within the friendslist.

due to the nature of the friendslist, and how much it reacts with the rest of the site, at this time, there is a limit of 100 users on your friendslist. during testing, large friendslists degraded the site, and caused very slow load times. there may be a purchasable or questable upgrade to this in the future, but at this time, it is a fixed limit. also, friendslist groups have been suggested as a add-on feature, but will not be implimented due to the same limitations.

new design
along with the friendslist, you may see some minor changes around the site, mainly... the smiley buttons. hope you enjoy!

  • Topic Gaia Friendslist is now active! - Posted: kaia9 Fri Jul 23, 2004 3:54 pm

friendslist update

the friendslist was relying on the $HTTP_REFERER variable to process requests. due to user-side limitations such as personal firewalls & anti virus software, using this varaible reliably became a cause for concern. there were a somewhat large number of users who's security software was impeding them from using the friendslist at all, though they could use the entirety of gaia.

so, i made the appropriate changes. unfortunatly a few of the automated functions (Move from Friends to Ignored & Move from Ignored to Friends had to be disabled, because they required the user to click on customized links, and not form submit buttons, which would have passed normal form variables.

the friendslist should now be working in its entirety, with a re-worked new feature for accepting friendslist requests: you now have two options for accepting. Accept Request and Accept & Add. they work for one user request at a time, and work as the buttons suggest they do.

if anyone continues to have any problems, please let us know via the sticky that will be in Questions & Feedback.

26 Concerning Site Lag and Connection ErrorsEdit

  • Topic Concerning Site Lag and Connection Errors - Posted: VO Mon Jul 26, 2004 5:06 pm

Dear Users,

We are currently debugging a new database system which will allow for a smoother and faster Gaia in the future.

During this time, we are experiencing connection errors associated with the install of the new system.

These problems are not caused by the introduction of the friendslist or the guild system, nor have the introduction of these features delayed the fixes on the database system.

Please be assured that we are working as fast and as hard as possible to remedy these problems in a timely fashion.

As a full fix date cannot be pinpointed until we determine the exact nature of the problems, we will let you know as soon as the problems are fixed in the announcements.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

11 System Downtime on Thursday Night, August 12thEdit

  • Topic System Downtime on Thursday Night, August 12th - Posted: lanzer Wed Aug 11, 2004 12:47 pm

To improve the speed for Gaia Online, we need to add a couple of servers every month to keep up with the demand for traffic. This Thursday Gaia will be moving to a bigger Internet Service Provider so we can have have more servers online.

On August 12th from 10PM, PST to 3AM, Gaia will be down as we move all the servers to the new provider.

After the move, we will be able to install even more servers and handle more users during the busiest hours.

Meanwhile, database enhancements are still being worked on. Once we're done with that the site will be even faster. Stay tuned!

13 server migration completeEdit

  • Topic server migration complete - Posted: kaia9 Fri Aug 13, 2004 7:08 pm

as you can see by the site being online, the migration to the new intrernet service provider (isp) went through successfully. the move was completed by the entire gaia staff, between the hours of 10pm august 12th, and 11am today.

avatar server: all servers apprear to have survived the move, with the execption of the avatar server, which is operational, but not currently delivering the avatar images. this is being worked on, and will be resolved as soon as possible.

for the time being, the inventory page is not operational due to the problems with the avatar server. please do not attempt make changes to your avatar, and please do not post repeat threads in questions & feedback concerning the lack of avatar images throughout the site. check this announcement for updates concerning the issue.

sushi errors: the only other major errors that are currently outstanding are some stray 'sushi errors' in the art arena, and trades and vend. for the moment, please do not attempt to use these parts of the site.

on a positive note, the move to the new isp provides a much stronger internet connection, better connections to the database servers from the webservers, better power, and most importantly... room to grow.

thank you to everyone for their patience during this transition.

16 Growing painsEdit

  • Topic Growing pains - Posted: lanzer Mon Aug 16, 2004 10:24 pm

For the past two days, Gaia has been experiencing problems with our network equipment due to the server migration. We sincerely apologize for the outages due to the equipment failures. We understand that it is fustrating to have service interruptions and bugs and we're doing all that we can to debug all the existing problems that were reported.

Please note that this past month's instability issues were not caused by the addition of new features. All of the problems were actually caused by the implementation or changes of a new Gaia network that will allow us to serve more users without a decrease in quality of service.

Though there were bugs during these system changes and migration, almost all the bugs and quirks had been worked out at this point. Without these changes, Gaia will not be able to grow, and the critical errors will only get worse. Now with the new system in place. Once the database has been optimized, site expansion will be smooth and connection errors will be kept to a minimum, if not, an issue of the past.

We thank you for your patience during all the changes and migration. As we get closer to the closing of the alpha testing phase, Gaia will be much more solid and bug free. The end of the alpha testing phase should come within the next two months, right before we introduce the battle system. Please stay tuned for more news and features to come.

23 Regarding Banner ads on GaiaEdit

  • Topic Regarding Banner ads on Gaia - Posted: lanzer Mon Aug 23, 2004 7:14 pm

Last week, Gaia Online finished its move to a new provider with a faster and better quality uplink. Just last week, we had added six more web and database servers for the new features as well as for the ability to handle more traffic.

At this moment, the cost for upkeeping the service and site development has increased signicifcantly. In order for us to be able to keep Gaia a free service for all users, it is now necessary for us to display banner ads to help offload the costs of maintaining and developing the site.

A while back, we introduced a number of banner ads for testing. After receiving extensive feedback from users, we made changes to the placement of these ads to be as unobtrusive as possible. We hope the result will please everyone and we will continue to listen to everyone's comments and suggestions.

Thanks for helping to keep Gaia a free service!

24 Gaia Journals are here!Edit

  • Topic Gaia Journals are here! - Posted: kaia9 Fri Sep 24, 2004 6:23 pm

Accessible through your profile page, or...

What are Gaia Journals?
Gaia Journals are designed for you to have your very own personal space on Gaia to write out your thoughts. Your Gaia Journal is your space, so you choose what it looks like, who can read it, and who can comment on whatever you decide to share. You can have a journal just for you and your friends to read and comment in, a public space that the entire Gaia community can view and respond to, or you could even use your Gaia Journal to keep a private diary all for yourself, that no one else can read. You could even replace your LiveJournal, Xanga, or other weblog with your Gaia Journal. It's all up to you!

What do I need to know to get around Gaia Journals?
A good place to start is with the Journal Listing button. Clicking this will take you to a list of all the journals made by other Gaians. All journal lists are given in order from most to least active, so those most recently updated will be right at the top. No need to hunt around to see if someone's updated! To read a journal, just click on its title. If you'd like to view several journals at once, mark the boxes next to them and hit the 'view marked journals' button to read them all on one easy page.

Since there will be lots of journals, you might want to sort them into a form that's a bit easier for you to find things. For starters, Gaia Journal already works along with your Friendslist! All your friend's journals are in a nice list you can see by clicking on the friendslist link. So if you're not using your Friendslist yet, now's a good time to start!

If you come across a journal you'd like to keep track of while browsing Gaia Journal, you can just click the 'subscribe' button at the top of that journal. Then when you come back later, just go to Journal Listing and click on 'subscriptions'. There you'll have a list of all the journals you've subscribed to. Don't worry about subscribing, because if you change your mind later, you can always edit your subscriptions later. Now you know how to find and keep track of other Gaian's journals so you can begin to read and comment in them.

Ready to get started with your very own Gaia Journal? Then click here to create your very own Gaia Journal.

If you'd like to read on with all the details, get more info from JournalBuilder!

28 Thread Subscription & SubnavigationEdit

  • Topic Thread Subscription & Subnavigation - Posted: kaia9 Tue Sep 28, 2004 9:17 pm

Thanks to all those who have waited with Gaia for this long without the ability to subscribe to threads that you want to follow. Your day has come.

Thread Subscription!
This allows you to Subscribe to threads that you are taking part in, and list them all in one place to make it easier to see if they have gotten updated. Tired of browsing through pages and pages of threads, only to find out that the thread you wanted to see hasn't even been updated? Be tired no more.

Subnavigation - has been changed slightly in a few places, and should work a bit better. thread subscription will show in all forum-like places, and the profile / journal / friendslist *should* show in said areas.

( oh. and memberlist finally got it's look & feel updated! yay! )

20 GST :: Gaia Standard TimeEdit

  • Topic GST :: Gaia Standard Time - Posted: kaia9 Wed Oct 20, 2004 8:24 pm

starting today, Gaia will be showing you a whole new look for the Gaia World.

well, dusk, dawn, and night - to be exact. and... just so that you don't have to be online at midnight pacific standard time just to see what it looks like at night, we're instituting GST or... Gaia Standard Time.

GST works like this: there are two gaia days to each day in RealLifeTM. it will be midnight on gaia at 12:00am (PST) and 12:00pm (PST). if you connect to gaia from another timezone, you will still see GST based on PST.

GST gives Gaia more of a real-world feel, and in the very near future, as we add features to the site, there will be many features that interact with the GST system. For now, enjoy the new look, and...'ll see why really soon...

Hello everyone:

We're currently working hard in getting the new avatar system up and running, and because this month's donation item will use some of the new features of the new avatar system, we could not release the item until the new system is ready. Sorry for the delay.

The new avatar system is almost complete. Please expect the donation item to be available by tomorrow morning. Thank you for your patience.

  • Topic Delay for donation item - Posted: kaia9 Tue Oct 26, 2004 2:00 pm

first off, thank you to everyone for your patience.

gaia avatar system 2.0 is online!

a few quick notes about the changes:

  • when clicking on your profile link you will be directed not to your inventory, but to a static page so that you don't have to load your inventory every time you need to go to something else in your profile like your journal or friendslist.
  • the profile page has changed slightly, now with two options. View My Inventory which will take you to a page with *all* your inventory, and Customize Me which will take you to what you normally see when you go to your profile. this is where you customize your avatar.
  • when customizing your avatar, you now have the option of "posing" your avatar. there is a button just below the avatar preview where you can change your hand position. thes hand positions will come into play very soon... but, i'll let V0 tell you about that later on today.

for now, enjoy the new avatar system which should work alot better than the old system, but as with any new system, we are working out the slight bugs in the system for the first week or so.

ALL questions or problems about the new avatar system should be reported to the Questions & Feedback Subforum: Avatar 2.0 Q&F.

26 AVATAR System 2.0 In Public TestingEdit

  • Topic AVATAR System 2.0 In Public Testing - Posted: VO Tue Oct 26, 2004 5:54 pm

Dear Users,

After 3 months of blood, sweat, and tears, we are now opening up the new Avatar system for all users to test.

For this release, we've made a few changes to the current profile page layout.

Going to the profile page will take you to an informational page with the following 2 links: (Note: This info page is temporary and will be updated with more useful links in the near future)

1) View My Inventory

This page is where you can view your entire inventory, equippable and non-equippable items. If you want to screencap your inventory, this is the place to do it. By clicking on a particular thumbnail, you can get the item description for that item, as well as the option to equip it.

2) Customize Me

This page is where you can customize your Avatar. Since this is the sole purpose for being on this page, please be aware that the only items shown are the ones that you can wear. And, since a user can have a massive inventory, please allow the page to finish loading before attempting to make changes to your avatar.

Above the "save changes" buttons, you'll notice a "choose pose" button. Clicking on that will give you the option to change your Avatar's arm positions. Avatar armposes are meant to allow user's to equip specific items in their hands and therefore, should be treated as such.

What does Avatar System 2.0 mean for Gaia Users?

Aside from graphical and rendering glitches(which are still being worked on) , you'll find that the sheer combinations of items is much more massive. No longer are users confined to equipping one item into one slot. And on top of that, this system will allow users more possibilities in terms of customizing their avatars by holding new items with the new arm positions.

As with all products in testing, please bear with us and help us debug the system. Avatar 2.0 is far more complex than the original version, and we're working as hard as we can to iron out all of the kinks in a timely fashion.

ALL questions or problems about the new avatar system should be reported to the Questions & Feedback Subforum: Avatar 2.0 Q&F.

Thank you for your understanding, your patience, and your support!

We hope you enjoy it!

29 Password Retrieval SystemEdit

  • Topic Password Retrieval System - Posted: Jakobo Fri Oct 29, 2004 8:21 am

If you've logged in to Gaia, you have have noticed instead of being wisked into your account, you were prompted with a screen asking for some additional information. And so, that brings us to our next big announcement:

Introducing the new Password Retrieval System

The Password Retrieval System is designed to make it possible for a user to get their Gaia password even during times when email is unreliable. For the longest time, we have had to put password retrieval as "disabled" for hotmail users. Under the new system, any Gaian will be able to get a password reset by identifying themselves to the system.

The system will ask users for two security queestions. These questions, when used with your email and your username, can be used to identify yourself to the Gaia Online system. In order to help secure accounts from unwanted hacking, we have broken the questions into two tiers. The first question is a more difficult and lesser known item, while the second question is a bit more common knowledge. However, by combining these with username and email, we are able to provide a web-based interface for users to fix their accounts.

However, it doesn't stop there! If you remember from before, a change in email would lock the account, rendering it unusable. This has now been changed as well. Now, changing your email will not lock your account. However, your email in the system will not update until you confirm your account at your new email address. As an added bonus, if you mistype your email in your profile, you can go back in and change it!

Finally, the full system is backwards compatible with existing accounts. Security questions are part of the new user registration process, and are also presented to all users when they log in for the first time (as of about 4 am this morning). If a user has not filled out their security questions, the old "Forgot my Password" will take over.

Quick Questions:

Can I change my security questions / answers?
The short answer is no. This is because to allow someone to change their security questions and answers would allow someone who gets in to your account to compromise your account further. Whenever any changes are made to your account, an email notification is sent to the account owner.

I told someone my security question / answer! Is this bad?
It's not the end of the world, but you should be careful about divulging this sort of information. It is highly unlikely that any user on Gaia is going to ask for your email, your mother's maiden name, and your favorite restaurant all at once. If you believe a user is attempting to get your Security Answers, do report them to an online moderator.

What do I do if I'm already locked out?
If you are already locked out of your account (and cannot create the security questions), the system will default back to the email version of password retrieval. This helps ensure all pending activations and account problems can still be resolved.

Jack hates the broad daylight... so don't be alarmed if he doesn't show up during the broad daylight hours on Gaia.

And when Jack goes, he takes the spirit of Halloween with him(meaning, the shops stop giving candy). But don't worry, he'll be back again when it starts to get dark again. He'll here throughout the weekend until Monday morning to give you your fill of candies and treats.

Take care and Happy Halloween!

01 Regarding the Halloween Event and Site ProblemsEdit

  • Topic Regarding the Halloween Event and Site Problems - Posted: VO Mon Nov 01, 2004 6:59 pm

Dear Users,

Over the past day, I've seen various positive/negative feedback regarding the Halloween Event and site problems. I'd like to address these issues with hopes to give you a better understanding of the situation as well as alleviate any frustrations you may have.

Regarding the Halloween Event:

The Halloween Event was perhaps our most ambitious one time event we've ever tackled on the site. It was our hope to immerse our users in a fun storyline that would relate well to Halloween. We expected there to be a large turnout to our site and we did set up specific hardware to address our estimates, but we did not anticipate the actual turnout that showed up on Halloween day.

Believe you me that we were all amazed that we broke another event record with almost 20 thousand users on at all times during the event.

It was because of this that the event forum slowed to a crawl, and broke a few of our scripts for the Halloween event. During the whole event, we were all working hard to get the game back up and running, and to fix all of the problems involved. The reason users didn't see "admins online" is because we were working in the background to fix all of the system crashes, roleplaying as labtechs, or working on more artwork for the event.

In terms of the trick or treating, we wanted to limit the time of day that Jack would appear because 1) it makes sense in the context of the day/night system and 2) because we wanted to encourage users to participate in the zombie event as well. However, because of the site crawl during this period, we have opted to extend Trick or Treating for another day.

In the end, with the Halloween event, we wanted any user who just wanted to drop in for a little bit would be able to get one item. Of course, any user who would spend more time would be able to get more. Yes, this does reward a user who spends more time on the site, but doesn't that make sense? We really do empathize with our users' frustrations with the event. But please rest assured that we have been trying our best to address these problems. And it is equally frustrating that we cannot accomodate everyone's needs.

Issues such as server crashes and load problems heavily rest upon our hardware constraints. And while we'd like to add more hardware to make things run even more smoothly, we are limited in our funding. A site like GAIA requires A LOT to maintain and we are very grateful of our donators who keep the site up and running and expanding.

Regarding Current Site Problems:

We are working as hard as we can to get everything back up and running. Please rest assured we will keep you posted when we fix specific issues.

With the introduction of Avatar System 2.0, as well as upcoming features like fishing, etc... our system has become a lot more complex and we expect to have other issues that may arise. But please rest assured that we are working our hardest to get all of the bugs out in a timely fashion.

I hope that clears things up for you, and everyone here at GAIA would like to thank you for your patience and support!

Take care!

13 Gaia Redirect.php To Help Protect Against ScamsEdit

  • Topic Gaia Redirect.php To Help Protect Against Scams - Posted: Jakobo Sat Nov 13, 2004 12:31 am

A new internal feature is being rolled out tonight, where all URLs will have the following format:

This is part of an ongoing effort to increase user awareness regarding scams on sites that are outside of the Gaia Online web site.

When a user is redirected to a site outside of Gaia Online, they will be provided some basic information, along with a link to follow to the web site itself. Please, always remember that an external web site will NOT ask for your Gaian Username and Password. Rest assured, anything Gaia Online does will be on the web site, the same site you are using right now.

Please remember, don't share your Gaia Password or your Gaia Security Answers with people and help us help you protect your account!

For those who are having trouble with tinyURL, shortURL, or the URL trimming web site of choice, we have made a fundamental change to the way signatures can be stored.

In your signatures, URL tags will not count towards your total signature limit. This means you are able to use the full Gaia URL in your signature, without any penalty for length or limiting of your signature. We hope this helps everyone who has had issues with redirects, Gaia, and short URL services.

  • Topic Gaia Redirect.php To Help Protect Against Scams - Posted: Jakobo Sat Nov 13, 2004 3:18 pm

In a continuing effort to avoid direct impact on a gaia user's experience, we have redesigned the redirect to provide basic frame functionality. Instead of an entire redirect page, we will instead be loading a Gaia style notice into the top frame with an option to close the frame on request.

We hope that the redirect will continue to protect Gaians in the future, will still allowing URL linking to images and off-site pages.

Thank you everyone for being so patient while we rewrite URL functionality for Gaia.

17 Item Recovery Claims for Sep 02 RollbackEdit

  • Topic Item Recovery Claims for Sep 02 Rollback - Posted: Jakobo Wed Nov 17, 2004 5:28 am

On September 02, 2004, there were several reports of lost items as the result of a serious glitch in the site's bank code, as reported by Lanzer. Since then, the administrative staff has been working on developing a system that would allow users to recover items from this reset. We know and understand some items were lost during this process, and therefore have developed a system for recovery.
Gaia Online Item Recovery Claim Form

Before you click the above URL though, it is really important that you understand how this process is going to work. Failing to read this may result in you submitting an invalid claim, which will be ignored by the system!

Upon loading the above URL, you are presented with a list of items. These items are the result of comparing your Sep 01 inventory to your current inventory. Therefore, this list contains only items that were in your inventory before, but are not now.

For this claim, you will be able to select 6 items from the list to submit as a "claim". This process does not automatically restore your items. Instead, it logs your activity and the items you have selected into our database. We will be using an external (private) script to process the claims. This script will verify the item(s) in question are lost, and if so, will return them to your inventory. Items we can confirm have been traded, sold in marketplace, or sold in store will not be returned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why only 6 items?
The process for restoring and checking an inventory is a very database intensive process. To have a system parse through over 1.3 million accounts would render Gaia Online pretty unusable. Additionally, the claim limit will encourage users not to attempt to claim their entire inventory just to see if they can get additional items. The time spent verifying false claims could be better spent verifying valid ones. While we do understand some users may have lost more than 6 items in this incident, we encourage users to reclaim their most valuable lost items.

Why isn't my ____ listed?
The data you are looking at in the claim form is your inventory from September 1, minus anything currently in your inventory. For some users, this will result in a rather large list. An item may not be listed for several reasons. The most likely is that the item either currently is in your inventory, or the item came into the user's possession after the snapshot date.

Why only 2 weeks?
We feel that two weeks is more than adequate time for users to submit their claims for their items. Given the average user logs on at least once a week, we hope that this message, plus system messages, and user support will help spread this information to all Gaians who were affected by this rollback.

What happens after I submit my claim?
Non-Technical - The system will on a regular basis process user claims and notify the user of the results via PM when it processes your claim. This process can take a while due to the large volume of claims. Technical - An internal script will be processing the submitted claims and performing the work of our General Moderators, the same people who investigate hackings and scammings on the site. The script will compare your item against your old and new inventories, check all relevant transaction logs on Gaia, and then (if everything checks out okay) will return the item into your account and send you a PM to notify you of the recovery.

Why such an automated process?
Given the size of Aerion's thread in QnF, it would take someone working an 8 hour shift over 211 days to process every missing item report in that thread. We are hopping this system proves effective enough to perhaps reuse in different ways. The automated system uses every bit of data on Gaia, performing an analysis that would take a Green Moderator several times longer. Therefore, a program of some sort was the only feasible answer.

  • Topic Item Recovery Claims for Sep 02 Rollback - Posted: Jakobo Wed Nov 17, 2004 7:35 am

As if recovering items from September 2 wasn't good enough...

Item recovery for this rollback will also support the incremental "roll forward" that occured on September 7, 2004.

That's two, two, two rollbacks in one. This should also address most of everyone's rollback issues. In case you accidentally already submmitted your claim, we have cleared the claim table. This of course, means you need to resubmit your claim if you already did the first time.

Thanks everyone for being patient with us all this while

19 Regarding Fishing and Site StatusEdit

  • Topic Regarding Fishing and Site Status - Posted: VO Fri Nov 19, 2004 7:56 pm

Dear Users,

As you already know, we've just launched fishing. Please keep in mind that there will be bugs associated with launching a game of this magnitude.

For now, we must remind you to be aware that, due to the traffic of the site, you may lose the catches due to errors associated with the flash module connection to our database. We are working very hard to iron out the last remaining bugs so please be patient with us.

However, if you have some extra gold to burn and you want to play, please use the cheapest bait as to minimize the gold lost from any bugs or glitches.

Thank you for your patience!

A couple of tips for fishing-

1) If you find that fishing is too hard for Gambino or Durem, you should practice more in Bass'ken Lake. By the time you've mastered Bass'ken, then you'll find the more difficult fishing spots to be easier.

2) Know when to use what kind of bait. If you're just starting out, try to use the cheap bait. Better bait will give you more of a chance at the really rare fishes over time. Better bait does NOT guarantee that you'll only get rare fish. It just raises the chances of you finding them. And if you did find them, you'll have be be skilled enough to actually reel them in successfully. By that same notion, there is still a chance for you to get rare fish by using the cheap bait, just not as much chance as when using the better bait(and that's why expensive bait costs more).

3) Master the basic rod if you can. The basic rod is cheap for a reason. Once you've mastered it, using the other rods will only make your performance better. I know people who can get fishes in Durem using the basic rod.

4) Be patient, mastering fishing takes time. Start easy, and work your way up slowly. No one will be a pro overnight.

5) Gaia Fishing is not a get-rich-quick game. If you play with the cheapest bait with a standard rod, you'll be making money steadily so long as you exit each game you play with a full bucket(18 fish). The better you get, the harder fish you catch, and the more gold you'll earn. It's as simple as that.

24 Banning Due To Recent Fishing Store GlitchEdit

  • Topic Banning Due To Recent Fishing Store Glitch - Posted: lanzer Wed Nov 24, 2004 9:08 am

Recently, there's been an unfortunate event. With the release of Gaia fishing, the fishing store had a glitch which allowed a user to gain a very large amount of gold from typing in false data. If no action was taken, the extra gold that was flooded into the economy would make the prices of items sky rocket and ruin Gaia's economy.

As part of Gaia's rules and regulations, anyone who hacked or cheated in any way will be permanently banned from Gaia Online. This includes the cheaters, themselves, and any accounts that received gold from the cheaters in a one way trade. Questionable trades are also being investigated at the moment.

This incident had unfortunately took a lot of engineering time away and, as a result, certain updates might need to be postponed because of it. Cheating hurts the development of Gaia. It also hurt fellow members by ruining the Gaian economy. We urge all users to please consider the consequences before trying out a glitch or any way to cheat on Gaia.

04 Marketplace 2.0 is released!Edit

  • Topic Marketplace 2.0 is released! - Posted: DARKNRGY Sat Dec 04, 2004 10:20 am

While the marketplace has been down, I've been doing some feature enhancements that I think you may enjoy. As we all know, new features are prone to bugs and this has caused a lot of heartache in the past. I'd like to give as much warning as possible this time around that this latest release might have bugs which can cause you to lose items, and generally just have a bad time. I've created a special account, MsTransaction specifically for reporting bugs. Please use this resource instead of creating new threads in Q&F. We have discovered that tracking multiple threads in Q&F is not efficient, and this is our solution.

On the other hand, there are some new things I'd like to briefly cover.

You can now fully customize your storefront with BB Code, including putting links, images, smilies, anything you want.

Keeping track of bids is easier now. You now have a Watch list, which will keep track of stuff you have bid on, even if someone outbids you. You can look at your watch list by clicking on the Watch link in your store.

Marketplace now supports game items (like fish =]). You can sell game items in any quantity you wish.

You can also now take a look at your store log. It will show you the last 100 events that happened in your store, including what you put up for sale, who's bidding, and any other event that takes place in your store.

When viewing the log, you can also click on the vend id (left column), which will take you to the entire bid history for a particular item.

In addition to the new functionality, the layout has changed as well. When bidding/buying items, you are automatically taken to the owner's store. This lets you immediately see who you are buying from, along with their custom storefront. I wanted to make it feel more like you're entering someone's special space, and getting to see everything they have to offer.

I encourage users to create threads in the old Marketplace Forum and link to those threads from inside their new storefronts. This will allow ongoing discussion associated with your store =]. In a lot of ways, these new feature enhancements may allow users to merge their existing exchange threads and the convinience of the Marketplace.

The new Marketplace can be found at

30 Fishing errors resolved; lost fish granted.Edit

  • Topic Fishing errors resolved; lost fish granted. - Posted: kaia9 Tue Nov 30, 2004 10:49 pm

we sincerely apologize for all of the errors that were found in the fishing game since it's launch. most, if not all of the problems with the game have been ironed out, and the game should run alot smoother, with less errors.

for those who have experienced problems (such as the game giving you an error when you tried to save, and losing all the fish in your bucket), any fish that you lost were recorded, and at this time, have been granted into your inventory. again, we sincerely apologize for the issues that arose.

we hope that users will continue to enjoy the fishing game, and bear with us while we fix any issues. if you do happen to have any issues, report those issues in the questions & feedback forum.

for the sake of fairness to all users: if you find a bug in the game or on the site that for whatever reason gives you an unfair advantage, and you choose to exploit that bug, you will be banned from gaia for violating the terms of service. if that bug generates gold or items, and you choose to share that gold or items with other users, each and every one of those users will also be banned for your indescretion. word to the wise: if you see a bug, report it to a moderator.

  • Topic Fishing errors resolved; lost fish granted. - Posted: kaia9 Thu Dec 02, 2004 9:58 pm

there was yet another build of the fishing game released today, which has one major difference from the old version: the game will close the window when it is done saving.

there were a large number of users who were hitting refresh after their game was finished (and saved) which allowed them to play again, for free, without using any bait. this is an example of exploiting bugs. no requests for fish caught while doing this will be honored.

  • Topic Fishing errors resolved; lost fish granted. - Posted: kaia9 Wed Dec 08, 2004 5:30 pm

Please also remember that attempting to load the fishing game in *any* other fashion other than clicking on the fishing links in the maps (such as changing the url or loading into an external player) is also a bannable offence, and should not be done.

if you have a problem with the game loading (after you click on the bait, but the flash module itself does not load) please refresh that page (refreshing before the game starts is okay) which should load the game. if you still have problems after a single refresh, please email gameadmin @ with your error.

10 Concerning Hair items/wig exploitEdit

  • Topic Concerning Hair items/wig exploit - Posted: DARKNRGY Fri Dec 10, 2004 7:58 am

This is a bug. Please do not attempt to equip/sell/trade/vend or anything else with these hair items. This issue will be addressed tommorow (12/10) as soon as we get a chance. Any further exploitation in this glitch will only make fixing it more difficult and could result in item loss if exploitation results in gained gold or items.

Thank you for your cooperation.

We have just added the FISH EXCHANGE in the Fishing Store. If you've caught a lot of fish and have been saving them up, here's your chance to trade them in for cool items. Talk to Old Man Logan in the fishing store and, if you've got enough fish for an exchange, he'll let you know.
