2004 was a leap year starting on Thursday of the Gregorian calendar.
It was also the second year of Gaia and its first Anniversary.

During this year notable changes happened on Gaia: a number of server moves and maintenance's caused (what is still known as) Sushi Errors, in the month of August a server migration was completed by the entire Gaia Staff between the hours of 10pm August 12th, and 11am. During that time the Avatar and Inventory server were down and Sushi Errors were springing up; a Developer named kaia9 informed Gaians to avoid going into the art arena, doing trades and vending.

As noted in the annoucement called Growing Pains; there were two days worth of problems with network equipment due to the server migration. Within this announcement, Lanzer informs Gaians that "The end of the alpha testing phase should come within the next two months, right before we introduce the battle system."

While the annoucement of a battle system brought excitement, the battle system itself took four years to release: October 23, 2008. So after this year, speaking of the battle systems' release date became a running gag among Gaians.

With an increase of members and new servers it was becoming apparent that the cost for up keeping the service and site development had increased significantly. In order for Gaia to be able to keep a free service for all users, it was necessary to display banner ads to help offload the costs of maintaining and developing the site. On October 1st, it was announced that for a period of thirty days starting from the day Gaia received a donation, those who donated would receive no banner advertisements.

When the release date for the Donation Items was coming up, an announcement informed Gaians of their delay, this was because the AVATAR System 2.0 was being incorporated into the system, and the items within the letters were dependent on this new system. With the release of the Donation/Monthly items (see below) they became the first two items that showed off the "Pose" feature. In addition to the new system, clothing was being edited to work with the new poses.
